Xbox One worth it for me?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I'm considering getting an Xbox One but could do with a little bit of level headed advice please!

Long story short, I own a PS 4 and over the past 3 weeks I have had a truly horrendous experience with Sony customer service after they disabled my account due a debt on the account from a blocked fraudulent transaction by my bank. However, this topic isn't about that because it will make my blood boil

Anyway, I've got to the point where I'm very tempted to switch simply because I loathe the idea of ever giving Sony any money ever again. I already own a very good spec'd gaming PC and the original reason I went with the PS 4 was due to the fact that I usually only ever buy the exclusives (was looking forward to Uncharted 4) apart from the odd game that I think is a better experience on a console.

So my concern is that if I get a Xbox One I would lose these exclusives, but also the Xbox exclusives usually wind up on PC anyway? Maybe not though, I would love Forza.

I like having a console, I like lounging on the sofa and playing with my mates v's sitting at the PC... So I definitely want one or the other but is it worth the switch, would I end up regretting it? (impossible question I know). What about all of the other functionality of the Xbox One? Does it become an essential part of the experience or do you use it once in a blue moon to demo to your friends when trying to bribe them into buying one too?

I'm concerned that I will cut off my nose to spite my face. So please help me to make a sensible decision.

Thanks a lot,

shalayer

just get it. you will love new xbox one controller.

xbox exclusives are not sure to end up on PC and recent xbox one exclusives are even less likely.

with friends, i usually play mortal kombat or any other fighting game of your choosing.  or forza.

Slim chance of that considering they'll be coming from a PS4 controller (although in my opinion, both of them don't hold a candle to the now-classic 360 controller).

I think the first and most important question to ask is how many Xbox One exclusives interest you? It wouldn't be worth getting just for Forza, especially when there are other games around to fill in the that "simcade" gap on the other platforms; Project CARS instantly springs to mind (which is finally releasing next month).

Also, seeing as you mentioned you like gaming on the sofa, allow me to offer up a more leftfield suggestion... http://doko.nzxt.com/ That would allow you to stream your PC games to your TV.

  • 1080p 30fps PC Streaming
  • Low Latency Streaming (50-80ms)

yeah sounds great...  not     pretty sure Razr's solution willl be better

Well, it replicates the Xbox One experience. :p

Yeah, Razer's offering will almost certainly be better; alternatively, you can use a cheap media center PC to stream or probably even the new Raspberry Pi 2.

To OP,

It sounds like your were more interested in the PS4 exclusives and like you said the Xbox One exclusives do tend to also come out for PC also. (e.g Dead Rising 3, TitanFall, Ryse, Fable Legends, Project Spark, Some of the Halo's, etc).

It also sounds like you just want to buy an Xbox one to spite Sony for the poor customer service you received after some sort of banking error? Trust me, Sony nor the customer service reps are going to care and you will just spend money on something you probably won't use.

You should be able to clear up the transaction/banking error with Sony fairly easily I would think, I've never experienced any blocks on my transactions/cards buying from the Sony store but when I travel overseas and don't let my bank know sometimes they do a transaction block thinking it's a fraudulent transaction and then I just have to call them up and allow the transactions.

If your graphics card supports hdmi out (which many if not most do these days) you could just get a hdmi cable from your PC to TV and use any wireless controller you want for the 'couch' experience.

i usually play mortal kombat or any other fighting game of your choosing.  or forza.

Not sure how you play Mortal Kombat on X1 as it hasn't even been released yet (Release date is mid-April this year) and its also a multiplatform title.

I have both the PS4 and the XBOX One.

Get the One if you wish. Its great to buy tv shows/rent movies plus play games. My only real two complaints with it is: its fan its considerably lower then the PS4 and it can be distracting at times...it has a low whine. The other one is because the hard drive is not replaceable, it fills up fast.

True, I didn't suggest that, though, as I don't know how far away their PC is; I'd wager it's at least in a different room and most people wouldn't fancy having an extremely long HDMI cable going between rooms, which is why I suggested streaming instead (again, don't know if they use Steam, so mentioned a general solution instead of Steam's own in-home streaming).

Well if the PS4 exclusives are important, then might I suggest the bank (and sony) look into the transaction, (also delete all bank or credit card details, I'll go buy a psn card if I need store credit)

Somebody somewhere will have to look into this if you complain. (moreso the bank side)

As far as the xbox goes, it's your money, spend it on whatever you want, (my only concern would be, what if you get a repeat transaction?)

The only thing I'm aware of regarding the xbox, you'll have to learn to navigate a new dashboard, (but that argument applies to all rival consoles regardless of one's preferred infrastructure) they're both good at what they do.

Also if you're still leaning towards keeping the ps4, why not simply delete all information possible from the profile, and just not use it anymore? (ok, you'll lose your trophies, but is that such a big loss?)

Leaving the profile on the console also means any purchases you've made, you get to keep, I download all my ps3 purchases to both my ps3's and my son gets to use the extra addons I purchase, on his profile as it's an authorised console)

I own a ps4 also the ps3 download thing was posted because I know it works, I don't know if it's the same on the xbox

Go for a xbox one, you won't see gears\halo\forza\forza horizon\ killer instint\crackdown\quantum break on pc. If you don't like any of those games stay with pc.

Both Gears and Halo have had PC releases. MS made a working Forza PC port to show how easy it is to port games with the new graphics api so I wouldn't be surprised if they released it for PC also.

Sunset Overdrive also had listings on sites like Amazon that it was getting a PC release, but was pulled possibly because MS want to ride the X1 exclusivity before they allow the PC release.

With DirectX 12 its much easier to port X1 games and Windows is just another platform of MS.

Does it really matter if the do show up on PC though? They will most likely come much later than the console release and even like a 6-12 months exclusivity is enough to justify the console purchase. There is also that factor of just relaxing on your couch and playing with a controller or when friends are over.

Baji is correct, when they do show up its going to be awhile after the X1 release.

As for the couch/controller experience you can do the same thing with a PC but it isn't as simple as plugging it in and it works like a console.

You need to either stream the video, have a long hdmi cable or move the PC close to a tv and connect via hdmi then you need to link up a controller and install software maybe something like Alienwares Alpha UI so when the system boots it has a similar menu to consoles. You can also setup the controller so when you press the power button the PC boots.

If you can hear your fan call MS and they'll send out a replacement. Had the same issue, you shouldn't hear any whine. Mine started after about 6 months (Was a day one edition).

Thanks everyone for your opinions. Looks to me like there is no definitive answer, so I may as well stick with Sony.

I guess if I was going to switch I was looking for a resounding "Xbox One is awesome!!!!". But I suppose I have to live with the fact that there is no competition in the market so get used to mediocrity and awful customer service.

Your fan must be faulty as the Xbox One is should be silent.

If you already got a good PC maybe not.

You could think about running an HDMI cable from your PC to your TV and use an xbox controller to play games on it when you don'T feel like playing with a mouse in front of a smaller screen. This is what i've been doing for a couple of years now and i like it. I almost never touch my xbox 360 anymore. Big picture is working reall well.

You will find that actually, quite a few Xbox One exclusives are not coming to PC. But you will see that many of the PS exclusives are also coming to PC. And now with Sony Online Entertainment changing to multiplatform, we will see even more games headed to the One as well. The Xbox exclusive line up is top notch and it is indeed worth picking one up if you haven't already. The great line up it has now, and going into 2015 is stellar. The console is the quietest of the bunch, has a top rated controller, has some slick TV features, more hardware features, and a constantly improving social and ui update experience.

Thanks everyone for your opinions. Looks to me like there is no definitive answer, so I may as well stick with Sony.

Xbox One is awessome!!!

Though you will find poor service not only at Sony, but at Microsoft as well.

honestly, i owned at least 3 versions of ps3 and 2 versions of xbox 360 and, for me, PS3 was a clear winner.

this generation i am not so sure.   i almost consider owning both, but it will prove too expensive and time consuming, and i already have a  gaming pc (though it is 3 year old... it still good for 1080p)

both consoles are nice.  and there are just not enough games yet to see which one pulls ahead.   i have high hopes for xbox one after directx12 and windows 10 hit.   surely they can do more with it.

so i would sell your ps4 and get xbox one :)    problem sold.

Sorry, I meant Killer Instinct (together with MK they share the top fighter for me, with tekken in a 3rd place, and others like SF and soul caliber I don't really like as much)

i wish there was more characters, but they are getting there slowly.

exactly what i meant.

This is plain false.

The only two big games that PS4 has as console exclusives (Not coming to Xbox or Wii) and are coming to PC are Street Fighter V and Tekken 7 which were previously multiplatform.

Sony's exclusives like Infamous, Uncharted, The Order, Little Big Planet, The Last of Us, MLB, Driveclub, Gran Turismo, Knack, Ratchet & Clank and etc have not had a PC release and I don't expect it to happen any time soon either.

I think you are confused on the issue, Daybreak (Formerly known as SOE) had PC exclusives that they are bringing to PS4 like PlanetSide and Everquest not the other way around, same thing is happening with other developers.

Nope it's not false at all. We have noted your opinion though.

But it's a good thing that we have a lot of PS4/PC exclusive games coming or have come. No Man's Sky, War Thunder, Planetside 2, Orcs Must Die, Load Out, Kingdom Under Fire II, H1Z1, DD2, Dragon's Dogma, Everquest Next, DC Universe, Blacklight Ret, Street Fighter, Tekken, Qbert, Hotline Miami, FFIV, DayZ....I could go on.

And nope, you are probably the one that appears to be confused on the SOE issue. The group, which was once dedicated to supplying games to only Sony Playstation and PC, is now available to (and plans to) release games on multiplatform, including Xbox and Wii.

Hopefully this is a great thing for all of us gamers. The more games everyone gets to experience, the better.

My experience with Sony CS does indeed suck as well, Amazon had to pickup the slack for me.

Questions like this always come down to the games at the end of the day. If you can only afford to maintain one console then pick the one with the games you'll know you'll enjoy and not be jealous to miss out on.

In regards to payments I only ever buy PSN topups (as you can get deals on them), or I use Paypal which the PS4 supports to top up my account. I see no reason to put my card details on an account if options like those exist.
