Starting New Job on Tuesday - Nervous

Recommended Posts

After 8 phone interviews, an IQ test & a couple of days of nausea - I am starting my new job on Tuesday.

The office is downtown Dallas, so I am also taking mass transit for the 1st time.
I feel like its the 1st day of school coming - I have that anxious/nervous feeling & its been reeking havoc on my stomach.

It is with a great company that has an excellent reputation on Glassdoor.com so I have that "dont screw this up" whisper in the back of my head.

I initially applied for an entry level position, but after the IQ test and a couple phone interviews, the Director of Operations wanted to talk to me.

After an hour long conversation with him, he suggested I would be happier at another position in their NOC - so I changed to that position.... then talked to 3 more managers to total 8 phone interviews.

The cool thing is after a week @ the HQ in Dallas, I go to training in San Diego for 4 weeks... Im bringing my golf clubs for sure !

The reason I am posting this is because there are usually some empathetic, intelligent people on neowin and may say something that will help with my nerves.

Getting nauseous isnt normal for me, but this opportunity could be the company I stay with for a very long time (most of their employees have been there for many years.)

So I just dont want to screw it up....

of course if the laptop they give me isnt a ThinkPad T-series - I will go postal & throw it out the window...so there ya go... ;)

Congrats. Don't think 'So I just dont want to screw it up....'. Think 'what's the most efficient way I can solve this problem', and don't be afraid to ask/look for help.

Don't start a task unless you're fully confident to do so. Get everything prepared well, and check, check and double check!

'"dont screw this up" whisper in the back of my head' - a good pianist will never think that. They just know they will do a good job, because they've prepared well.

And be (very) organized from day one.

Thank You to all 3 of you -

I think the problem is two-fold.

1.  I have usually worked for a small company, or a company my family owns or has direct involvement with - so I have never been bothered with things like showing up 10-15 minutes late, or taking an extra 10 minutes on lunch, or working remote, even convincing managers that the work I do is good enough where I dont need to be bothered with silly things like not being 3 minutes late... - things like that.  But a company with 800 employees - I hope I dont get lacsidasical and my attendance causes problems.

2.  The Director of Ops said, "with your aptitude scores, we expect great things out of you" .... Im thinking  "lovely - they have raised expectations to a level I cant achieve"

Well - thats it I think...

Its not my quality of work - its the perception of me, and the fact a big company wont overlook if I show up late... (I hate mornings)

You're psyching yourself out, you made it past the hardest part, getting the job, take it easy, you will not have to actually worry about real work stuff till after training anyways, just be super puunbctual, process in, enjoy the training, bet you will do just fine

Ya know? - that helped - Thank You.

This isnt the 1st time I have thought expectations were an enemy - but I also know fear is something made up -- I will just focus on enjoying the ride.

Being punctual will be a new habit for me - I just need to force myself to not hit the snooze button 23 times :D

I dont want to sound like a slacker who has relied on nepotism;  because .... well .... that was partly true  - I just need to re-wire my thinking/habits

Just walk in with the mind set that you have been employed there for a few years...  Treat everyone like you've known them for a few years as well.

Attendance part is going to be a self discipline thing...  I'm like my Father when it comes to being on time.  I'm so anal about it.

You should be fine.

Be yourself. You've already done the hard bit - convincing them you're worth their time and money. Doing the job will come naturally. It's an awesome opportunity, and nervous excitement is a good thing.

Just be yourself, be confident in what you do, and congrats

Also when you become rich and famous, remember me, who clicks 'like' on quite a few of your posts, (and incidentally, the first person to mention it too) :p

T3X4S, if you weren't nervous I'd be a lot more worried about you. Good work mate, hard parts over.

I know how you feel.  When I first interviewed at the company I am at now it was for a 2L support role.  It actually turned out to be for a system engineer position.  Now a little over 2 years later I am in a senior level position.  Do a great job, learn a lot, and there is no limit.

Agreed with most above - you're past the hard part now, don't worry until you've understood the companies processes you may feel a little over whelmed but you'll get there and probably sooner than you think.

Don't over think anything and do not be afraid to ask questions, no matter how silly they may feel. The only thing to add to that is, if you ask a question, where possible try and explain what you've tried or thought about first, that way people won't feel like your just asking them to do your job and that you have some initiative.

Good luck, and I hope it works out to be everything you hope it is and more!

I just started a new job (in a new country at that) so just take it easy and expect to learn tons. Ask questions when you don't know something and make sure you are sure of what you are doing when making changes to productions systems. Lol Google will be your new best friend. :)

If ypu are not 100% familiar with their software in use, try to get demos and setup some VMs to learn. Microsoft does 180 day trials for most of their software and I'm sure ypu can get your boss to give you a copy of something if its not available public ally to setup on a VM on the site.

Check on classes if you feel you need that as well, employers will pay for it in most cases (or at least partially)if it will benefit the company as well.

Oh and hey, Thinkpads are the best machines! I got crappy Dell. Lol be glad ypu got that instead of what I have as I wanna throw my Latitude out the window. All our systems are Dell so that's why but I am tempted to take my own Thinkpad and work on that. Lol. Maybe I can get them to buy me that new sweet Dell XPS 13 tho. :)

Thanks again to everyone who chimed in - and Warwagon - that was a great vid clip.

Today couldnt have gone any better - well... if they gave me a Gulfstream as a perk, that would be better.

But the company is freaking cool, people are great, office is like many tech startups... only we have been in business for 27 years, but changing now.

Show up 15 minutes late on the first day to test their response. If you don't hear any complaints, try 20 minutes the next day. Any new place I go, I like to learn what the limits are.
