Elliot B.
I had a 7870 XT when they came out because it was fantastic value at the time (as the GTX 970 is currently). A year later, I bought a second 7870 XT and CrossFireX'd them. However, in the two years that I've had that setup, I was fed up of games only supporting one card, or issues such as flickering textures in some games that supported CFX etc. So now I'm going back to a single-card setup (I'm enjoying my GTX 970) and I think I'll keep it this way. So my question is: Those who have had SLI/CFX setups in the past (or those that do at the moment) - did/would you do it a second time?
Aergan
Last time I did SLI in my system, it involved two Voodoo 2 12MB 3dfx cards and an ATi Mach 64 8MB. No issues with Carmageddon 2 & Unreal Tournament though
The Evil Overlord
In a word, no. My reason? New cards are more than adequate to handle demanding programs and games, my secondary card now just run my side screens.
Jason S. Global Moderator Posted February 25, 2015 Global Moderator Share Posted February 25, 2015 in my opinion, if youre going to do it then just buy 2 cards from the get-go. i dont see the reason to wait and buy another down the road since the rate of releases is relatively fast. i have an SLI setup, but i hardly game on my desktop anymore. i find myself migrating towards consoles only these days. i just dont have the time. notchinese
Yes. My progression: 2x GTX 260s, 2x 6950s, 2x GTX 770s 1 card is just not powerful enough if you are running games at 2560+ resolution, there is no other way around it. Andre S. Veteran Posted February 26, 2015 Veteran Share Posted February 26, 2015 I originally bought 2 GTX 760s for my build. It was faster and less expensive than a GTX Titan, at the time. It worked perfectly. I would still recommend it if it made economic sense as it did in my case, but that depends a lot of factors. Buying a second card to put in SLI rarely makes sense in my opinion. By the time a single card isn't powerful enough, better single GPUs will be out and you'd be better off selling your current card and buying something current-gen.
