Facebook flags aboriginal names as not 'authentic'

They made me change my name a couple of days ago. Said it's not my real name. Same with PSN they say it's offensive.

So the algorithm needs a little tweaking - so what ?  Of course this is impossible to explain to the general public - they would rather see evil intentions behind everything.

The algorithm doesn't need tweaking, the policy needs to be removed because it was a stupid policy to begin with.

I agree with you Enron, hopefully one day it'll go the way of MySpace, Digg, ICQ and horrible social networking sites.

So because YOU dislike it or don't use it, you want those who DO like and enjoy the site to lose it?

Nice... really nice.

Couldn't agree more! :)

Yep,

Sure do! :)

Most of anything I've ever seen on there is so useless and stupid and shows the IQ level of those people, it makes me sick to look at it when other people are showing me all their "cool" posts! :x

In this thread: People wanting to seem somehow "above it" by showing disdain for the worlds most popular web-app.

Try and keep to the topic of what this is, else you are nothing more than the trolls you claim to not associate with.

On topic: This is nothing more than an algorithm (as stated above) needing iterative adjustment.  Was it built with western cultures as a bias?  Yes.  Was this to be discriminatory? No.  Will it likely be fixed? Yes

Is the policy itself flawed?  I'm not sure.  I personally can see the benefits and drawbacks of allowing false names (and thus a supposed anonymity).

perhaps facebook should be forcing its members who have gang names in there titles. to have anything but normal legal names rather than

such titles as "1stname headhunterfor 2nd name" example. (headhunter) is what a member of The Chelsea Headhunters use to identify them selves. they are an English football hooligan firm.

Hold on for a sec -- what stupid policy are you referring to ?

Are you referring to the policy that prevents people from trying to use common words as their name ?

Or are you referring to something else ?

Or are you simply saying its stupid because you dont like the site ?

I agree with you 100%, there is nothing more annoying than for people to assume everyone wants to know where they are and what they are doing.  I used to use facebook.  At one time I had about 400 friends, then about 1x a month I would start getting rid of the people I dont talk to, then I would get rid of people who post too many "Thank God" or "Jesus is Love" crap, then eventually I just said - screw it - and stopped using it altogether.

For me it was a reminder why I dont care for most people.

I don't think capitalization in the middle of names has anything to do with native culture, given that they're giving the names in English and not a native language. Making this into an aboriginal rights issue and tying it into the Redskins like the professor is doing is just stupid.

Facebook should accommodate them, though. Beyond that, I think Facebook's whole policy on names is stupid to begin with. Most Facebook users don't care about fake names.

I'm saying if someone wants to call themselves Throat Wobbler Mangrove then they should be allowed to - as long as they're not using a famous or notable name then individuals should be allowed to use nicknames etc. instead of having to use their real name.

What if their real name is the same as someone famous, etc?  It's happened before,

I and a lot of my customers use it for advertising our businesses. It reaches an exponential audience 1000x that of radio and TV and is much less expensive. However, staying on topic, I agree with tweaking the policy or algorithm a bit.

Then ask for confirmation then - as long as the person isn't posing as the famous person then maybe a message to inform visitors that this isn't the famous person of the same name.

Facebook without requiring real names would be stupid.

if you don't want to use real names, then use a forum or any number of other services, Facebook is made for a purpose, don't try to change the purpose use something else.

Your mistake was to think the point of facebook is all about having as many friends as possible to start with. nothing wrong with it, but it's more about having the right people and using groups so that you can use it to keep up with stuff outside of your main circle while your main circle is your closer friends and family who you actually want to share stuff with or get updates from.
