MikeM97
Hello again . I came with a new question for you . I'm sure you all remember that I can directly install any Windows through its Setup . I assume Windows 8.1 can always be refreshed by another Windows 8.1 / 8 / 7 setup , right ? I can install the fresh OS along the old on through the setup [ without a CD/DVD/USB ] Well , I want to know if Windows 7 and above would support all other windows versions setup . Romero
Your question is really unclear (especially that part about 8.1 being 'refreshed' by 8 or 7). Just remember to install Windows versions in order of release and you'll be fine, as the new OS' bootloader will automatically detect and add the older versions to its menu. If you do it the other way round a quick startup repair using the newer OS' install media should fix any bootup issues.
MikeM97
I think I wasn't clear enough ... You remember Windows 7 , right ? If I run Windows 7 and I put 1 .ISO of an older Windows in DT , I could install it with no problem . [ Like XP or Vista ] . Does Windows 8.1 have the same acts ? [ will let me install older Windows through their Setup ? ] . For example , Windows 10 will fail a Windows 8.1 Setup . That's why I'm trying to remember how's goin' with 8.1 . +Frank B. Subscriber² Posted March 2, 2015 Subscriber² Share Posted March 2, 2015 You mean install Windows 7 from within Windows 8 and newer? No, that's not going to work.
MikeM97
I'm not quite sure if we're on the same line ... I was running Windows 8.1 [ C partition ] and I completely installed Windows 7 [ on E partition ; from an .ISO image withoud any other storage device ] . I'm asking if it would happen with XP , Vista or 8 too .
Romero
I was running Windows 8.1 [ C partition ] and I completely installed Windows 7 [ on E partition ; from an .ISO image withoud any other storage device ] . Did this add Win7 to Win8.1's boot loader, allowing you to select either one during bootup?
binaryzero
This isn't going to work...
MikeM97
Did this add Win7 to Win8.1's boot loader, allowing you to select either one during bootup? Yes . [ It was a dual boot ] That's what I want to know ... If Windows 8.1 let the user to have any dual boot [ directly install ] . I'm asking this because , at Windows 10 , if you run a Windows 8.1 setup , it will say '' setup has failed to determine supported install choices '' , while Windows 8.1 has'nt when I was installing the 7 . Romero
Yes . [ It was a dual boot ] Sounds strange because I'd have expected an older OS to overwrite the bootloader of the newer one. Perhaps launching Setup from inside the newer OS prevented this in some way. That's what I want to know ... To be honest I have never installed an older version of Windows from within a running instance of a newer version. I have installed from a bootable DVD/USB and as expected needed to repair the bootloader of the newer OS later. As far as Windows 10 goes, I wouldn't go by its behavior now as indicative of what it'll be like by the time it hits RTM.
