Vulkan is to OpenGL as DX12 is to DirectX. Mantle "inspired" both Vulkan and DX12. Valve supports Vulkan because they support OpenGL since Steam now runs on Linux and Mac as well as Windows. AMD, nVidia, Intel, etc. will support Vulkan just like they do OpenGL. None of that is going to make Vulkan's share of the market any larger than OpenGLs is today. Vulkan is necessary to just retain current OpenGL supporters so they have something to compete with DX12 and Apples Metal API (also similar to Mantle). The same people who support OpenGL today will support Vulkan tomorrow, it's not going cause a people using DX today to move to it. They could have just called it OpenGL 5.0 but that doesn't sound as cool.

Yeah, but Vulkan is an attempt to make OpenGL relevant and a serious competitor to DirectX, which is what I was getting at, so more people will support it as we go on. Vulkan is a recode of OpenGL so it would be an injustice to just cal it OpenGL 5.0.

And actually, AMD is giving Mantle to the Vulkan project so they can base it on Mantle, so Mantle is not just inspiring Vulkan.

Vulkan is no more (or less) a "serious competitor" to DirectX 12 than OpenGL 4.x was to DirectX 11.x. It's just the step they need to take to stay relevant at all and not have the industry pass them by.

More people who use OpenGL will move to Vulkan as we go on, yes. Just as more people who used OpenGL 3.x moved to 4.x as we went on. It's not going to cause people who are using DX today, or Apple Metal, etc. to move to Vulkan though. It's just the next step of OpenGL. In fact I believe it used to be called GLNext before the decided to name it Vulkan.

Vulkan is a recode of OpenGL so it would be an injustice to just cal it OpenGL 5.0.

The same can be said for DX12 yet they still call it 12. It's a recode that's lower level and works differently. In fact, it doesn't get much press but at the same time DX12 launched MS is also launching DX11.3 which is the continued evolution of prior high level DX versions. I guess by Khronos Group (OpenGL/Vulkan makers

) logic then MS should have named DX11.3 DX12 and called DX12 Romulan or something.

And actually, AMD is giving Mantle to the Vulkan project so they can base it on Mantle, so Mantle is not just inspiring Vulkan.

I hadn't heard that. That's actually makes the situation sound worse. It makes it seem like Khronos Group, after having been working on GLNext for a while now, couldn't come up with anything good on their own so had to adopt AMDs solution. That makes AMD look great and Khronos look incompetent.
