Valve unveils Source 2 Engine at GDC 2015

Source 2 is the successor to Valve's original Source engine, which has been used since the release of Counter-Strike: Force in 2004. It has also been used for multiple games since, including the seminal Half-Life 2. At GDC, Valve's Jay Stelly said the content-creation toolkit will be available for free, along with a Vulkan-compatible version.

"The value of a platform like the PC is how much it increases the productivity of those who use the platform," Stelly said. "With Source 2, our focus is increasing creator productivity. Given how important user generated content is becoming, Source 2 is designed not for just the professional developer, but enabling gamers themselves to participate in the creation and development of their favorite games. We will be making Source 2 available for free to content developers."

 

Vulkan, formerly known as Next Generation OpenGL, is a "cross-platform, cross-vendor 3D graphics API that allows game developers to get the most out of the latest graphics hardware."

"This combined with recent announcements by Epic and Unity will help continue the PC's dominance as the premiere content authoring platform," Stelly said.

Valve also announced Steam Link today, an in-home game-streaming service, as well as the pricing and release month for the Steam Controller. For more news from GDC 2015, stay tuned to IGN.

I think this is great news! This could also signal title announcements in the coming months! I would imagine they would launch a AAA title along with the new engine.

This may of been a factor as to why the Unreal 4 engine can be used in full for free, and only get paid on the published end.

I hope Valve will push Vulkan/OpenGL now and not waste too much time on Direct3D. They bought the Quake engine and over time as they made changes to it, OpenGL went out the window for some reason. OpenGL has always been a very flexible API and Vulkan will make it even more flexible and as its cleaned up I bet we'll see more games using the Vulkan API. When will we see a continuation of Half-Life 3 though? Great series but medium to low replayability. :(

I hope there will be HL3 or some other great single player game.

 

as for replayability, i replayed HL2 + EP.1 + EP.2     again last year,   with CINEMATIC MOD.    it is awesome!    amazing graphics.

True.. But that also means a POSSIBILITY for more OSX/Linux games.. :D

It also means that Source 2 games will never be Universal / XBONE.

Source 2 is pretty old now, I doubt other engines like UE4 have much to worry about and going free for that was a way to target the ever growing mobile developers out there that can't pay outright for a game engine license like before.

Valve will surely have a game ready other than "porting" Dota 2 to Source 2.

 

At this point releasing an engine without anything to showcase it would be kind of stupid. Specially for a company like Valve since it has great ip to showcase it.

 

What will it be? Half Life 3, L4D 3, a new CS ... time will tell.

Source 2 is pretty old now, I doubt other engines like UE4 have much to worry about and going free for that was a way to target the ever growing mobile developers out there that can't pay outright for a game engine license like before.

 

Source 2 isn't that old actually, and I'm not sure valve ever targeted taking over, or worrying other engines.

 

They will also be offering free to develop with (not sure on royalties or fees after hitting prod on the code, though.) So, the major difference will be ease of use between engines, and honestly, source was always 'easier' to use, in part to the dev tools and support they offer.

I really wouldn't expect a new CS for years yet, GO has only been around for 2 and is just starting to get major tournaments, there is a lot of money in skins invested too, they won't make the same mistake and split the community like that once more I don't think.

Might be CSGO graphically remade from scratch using Source 2.

 

But i highly doubt Dota 2 will be the game used to showcase it.

Well, when they launched the first source and updates to the engines, they simply ported over a lot of their things and showed the graphics and physics. I'd think they will do the same, then turn things over to the devs/public and see what mods come out.

 

Even with source 1, the first new games to come out weren't that hot, and didn't show off all the power of the latest builds.
