Help with webhosting?

Question

Hi there,

I am shutting down a website and I want to start it up from scratch on a new webhost.  Can anyone recommend me any decent webhosts with good prices? All I really want is a simple blog but with space to expand it should I need to.

Thanks.

Oh, I clicked on it so you'd earn your $0.02! :p

Comes out of my company account anyhow, so I never see the bill, thanks though! :D

Digital Ocean is by far the best.

Digital Ocean is by far the best if you know the terminology and know how to configure your own servers and DNS. They have made the process easier by allowing you to install images pre packaged with things like WP, but this is only half the battle.. WP is quite heavy especially when it is attacked by spammers and it can bring a server to it's knees, DO is just a glorified VPS and like most cheap VPS hosts they won't think twice about disabling your service if it starts to have a negative effect on their network, if you don't have the know-how to prevent this or fix it then DO is by far the worst.

You seem to be ill-advised on how it is they work or the services they are supporting on their Cloud VPS Network, they are cheap as long as you use low amounts of resources, you can scale your payment plan accordingly.

All you need is linux knowledge, if you don't have that there's an abundance of in-depth community-driven tutorials that are extremely thought-out and adjusted accordingly for each version of the OS used.

Wordpress also has a lot available and in-place to prevent spammers that are available purely as plugins, although I'd hardly ever recommend WordPress anyhow, depending entirely on what a client would want to run.

Not sure what you mean by negative effect, if you mean in the sense of bad-publicity then I wouldn't blame them. They are the farthest from the worst though, that's for sure. I feel like you haven't used them or had ill-intentions while using them and now have taken it personally.

I use Google as my domain registrar (transferred from 1and1) only

https://domains.google.com/registrar

$10  a year registration fee.

Free private domain owner information.

100 Alias domain e-mail address that link to a standard gmail account.

And a hosting / running site.http://asmallorange.com/

Shared (tiny package) $35 a year (not month) - low traffic at my site.

They have about every free php portal product you can deploy at a click of a button

Copies the files, creates and create, link and setup db automatically.

Or do it all manually yourself.

If you want to see the site (really need to put out some new anime reviews..)

http://www.etanime.com/ - Using word press

I use DO for my personal sites.

"All you need is linux knowledge" that was pretty much my point.. if you do then yes it's one of the best but if you don't then it can be one of the worst since you won't know how to manage it properly... DO also expects it's customers to have this knowledge so contacting support with trivial issues won't get you the help you would receive at a standard web hosting.

They do have a great guides section to help get started.

I personally use godaddy.  Cheap reliable, and awesome support.

Stay on shared, never upgrade to a VPS with them. Their awesome support goes literally out the window with that upgrade purchase. Just a forewarning, went through the troubled experience myself which is how I landed with Digital Ocean.

Thanks for the info.  Yea the company I work for has a dedicated server with them, then I have personal shared hosting.  I haven't had issues.. but never used their vps services.

Another digital ocean fan but agree about the set up. You need to know how to secure the server; disabling the root user, not just chmodding everything to 777 as per most "solutions" to WordPress problems etc etc. I'd say stick with shared hosting if you're only after a single site. Maybe spin up a digital ocean account with a free voucher code to see if you can wrap your head around it.

It depends what your expertise is and what your disaster requirement expectations are. ;-)

If it's just a small blog then use shared hosting. If you want to experiment with servers or VMs try out Digital Ocean. If you have high DR requirements (for a business/startup) try out Amazon Web Services.

If you are a beginner, I recommend DreamHost. You can manage everything from their panel and even add more sites later.

We use InMotionHosting for work.  They're fine.  We have little downtime.  We're using a VPS, though, so not sure about regular hosting.

I use Dreamhost for personal accounts, but do really do much with them anymore.

I loved their shared hosting support, the issue with the VPS and Dedicated is that they catch you with having to be completely self-reliant. They can't access your server or modify anything (which to me is completely fine, I am well versed with hosting and all of the tidbits) but their server's message when trying to connect was 'connection refused even though the SSH keys were accepted' all of the usuals out of the way (IP allowed to connect, is the connection going through all of the checks first, am I using a supported version of SFTP, etc. etc.) at the end of it the final conclusion was basically "we can't see anything on our side at all so we can't help sorry.

It's frustrating but no fault of that rep in particular, I just felt like there's a general lack of support which is not the case on DigitalOcean

Digital Ocean is for medium to advanced users who know how to configure a server.

If you are experimenting with servers in anyway that could affect your ability to authenticate you should copy your droplet to another instance and mess with it in a lab setting. I wasn't aware people still messed with production servers ;-)

Another vote for DO (while i had various issues with them). We use them for WP (20+ sites), it is easy to setup and cheap for VPS. If you put caching (wp plugin, varnish, whatever) it can handle tons of trafic (basically serving static html files).

Yea, our server sometimes screws up and needs to be reset.  I called them up and the lady put in the ticket for me, and walked me through how to do it on the site.

The host i recommended is more than sufficient for the OP's needs and if he wants a VPS they also offer that service.

and the support is top notch.

I use HostGator. The only time I've had issues with them, was when I was using the FTP as a backup for my Archives. They didn't appreciate my 2.5TB Data being uploaded. :p

I'm still learning HTML/CSS & PHP/MySQL so my site is dormant on there, pretty much. My domain had to do with EVE Online, but since CCP Games has changed their policies, my domain has no use anymore. :( I'll be getting a new one.

I like HG Support, they've been incredibly helpful.
