Memory Cards for New Camera

Recommended Posts

I traded in my D60 for the D7100 yesterday, and had a few minutes setting up the camera and looking at the menus.

I put in my 8Gb SD card, which would normally fit about 450 photos on it.  Generally, I would never see it pass more than about 200 photos at any one time, but with a honeymoon coming up, I don't want to get caught short.

The camera proudly displays that only 141 will fir on the original 8GB card.

So I have looked to purchase two 32Gb cards.  I just went for the most popular on Amazon which is the Transcend 32GB Premium SDHC Class 10 UHS-I 300x Memory Card.  A sure upgrade to the 8Gb class 4 card I currently have.

But with the advent of using video, I am a little worried the 64Gb may not be enough.  I'll probably just use them as overflow cards, rather than save RAW on one and JPEG on the other.  Perhaps I'll store video on one and photos on the other if the camera allows.

Do you think the 2 x 32Gb would be enough, or should I opt for a 64Gb or two?  I guess doing the math, if it's 8GB = 141, then 32Gb would be 564.

Saying that, I guess while in the USA, I could just pick up another card if I run low.  Maybe I have just answered my own question!

Thanks

Not sure why you are limiting yourself to 2 cards - the beauty of SD cards is that you can have as many as you want, and can swap back and forth all day long. I would go for a higher capacity card (64 GB, 128 GB), as these are relatively cheap.

I'm not a serious photographer, nor do I use my camera often, but I keep a 64 GB SD card as my primary, 32 GB SD card as my alternative. I only buy the fastest cards available, so that I can use the cards in the future in a newer camera that will support RAW/4k capture. I also have a 16 GB as a backup, and a few 32 GB microSD cards as backups/along with an adapter.

If you're in the US, you can pick SD cards at consumer electronics stores like Best Buy, Fry's, MicroCenter, etc. Heck even grocery stores carry them too!

I'll be heading to the US in June, so will probably pick up more if needed then.

Generally though I stick cards in the camera and forget about them.

I have the Nikon 7100 as well and I use two of these cards:

Transcend SDXC UHS-I U3 64GB

I have the picture settings set to the max and take JPG+RAW. I also went on a honeymoon for three weeks last year and almost filled up the cards.

If you plan on taking many pictures in rapid succession (forgot the technical term for it, but you basically just keep pressing the shutter) you'll need quick cards. Otherwise the buffer of your camera will fill up quicker than it can write to the cards.

Also, the size of the cards is entirely up to you. Do you take a lot of pictures? Do you shoot everything two and three times? Do you shoot videos with the camera as well? Do you take pictures of everything? If yes, then you'll need a lot of storage.
