Should I upload this video?

Recommended Posts

It's a bit of a 'bombshell' video.

About 14 years ago, end of school leaving, I was pretty much the only one with a video camera and filmed the day, but at the end there was a end of year assembly.

Now what happened in that assembly was recorded and for some it's the most embarrassing event of their lives. A bunch of girls decided it would be a good idea to do something for the end of year on stage, in front of everyone.

It was a choreographed dance, that was utterly cringe worthy and embarrassing beyond belief.

They were the sort of 'I'm better than you', snooty stuck up types, which to this day they still seem to be. I've come across posts and discussions from them talking about that 'dance' and how embarrassing it was and thank god it's left in the past, never to be remembered.

Now I've sent my old camera off to be repaired to get some old family movies onto DVD, and came across the tape I recorded it all on, I'm wondering if I should upload that video the whole thing including that 'dance' they did and inform the one of them that I can contact of the existence of this and think of the spreading prospect of them all reliving that 'dance' they did and potentially everyone seeing it again!

I'm pretty sure none of them know of the existence of this.

It's complicated, do they know they were filmed for definite?

Is the resulting upload going to cause some sort of legal dispute?

Some people would be petty enough to at the very least, get legal advise on how to get that video removed, if not, some sort of compensation....

I'd air on the side of caution, and not upload it

they have absolutely no idea about the video, pretty sure i never bumped into any of them before they were on stage, and i was at the back, far out of sight of them.

i could get around 'legal' issues by just blurring their faces slightly?

none of them even know me anyway, never knew them in school, never knew them out of school, haven't seen them since i left either, so they'd be hard pushed to find out who actually uploaded it. lol

Oh I reckon you could get a few thou for that film :laugh: ............on the serious side I would put it in you attic as a memory of your past for your Grand children as raking up old coals is never a good idea,

The photographer/cameraman holds the rights rather than the subjects in the photo/video.

The photographer/cameraman holds the rights rather than the subjects in the photo/video.

Maybe so, but not in all cases especially when you bring in Defamatory laws into it you might find, you no longer hold the higher ground here. In which I would argue posting an embarrassing video of something that was 14 years ago could fall under.

Also I believe  the photographers rights depend on the location and whether a school would be classed as public or private property, I would assume the latter. In that case, photo's taken in a place regarded as "private" property, permission is required when taking pictures/videos to my knowledge.

Long and short of it is... what do you honestly seek to gain out of posting it? Is the potential risk of legal action worth it? I would argue not.

Post it to 4chan, then post on your FB wall 'oh look what someone uploaded anonymously!'
Clears you from taking the heat and well, would be funny to see their reactions to the vid, just be sure to share that with us.
Screw legality, theres ALWAYS a way around it. I say do it.

posting embarrasing high school dance =/= to posting nude pictures of your ex meant only for you to see

revenge porn as "photographs or films which show people engaged in sexual activity or depicted in a sexual way or with their genitals exposed, where what is shown would not usually be seen in public"

pretty sure this is not what the OP whats to post.    (there is no nudity, right?)

we see plenty of funny videos of people unaware they have been taped on TV so I doubt there will be any issues here, unless there is something incriminating in the clip.

Given the tone its written Id suggest it may be just a bit more than horse play or they wouldnt have asked

Who cares if the situation is turned around? The girls did this dumb dance in public for everyone to see. How are you guys thinking there is any case for a lawsuit? Defamation? Come on...

And is this really a grudge or just an opportunity to post a funny/embarrassing video? There is nothing wrong with being embarrassed.. it's not harassment...

Just post it anonymously and go with it.

what if one of them commits suicide?

Then they had issues from long before this that no one cared enough about.

that does not tell us much.

was there nudity?     then don't post it, or blur all faces at the very least.

if not, i don't see the problem.

My immature first impression is "post it or it never happened".  I commend you for posting and asking questions concerning the issue.  It shows you have a heart.  You take full consideration in the matter.  Which is what a mature/sane person should do.  After reconsidering Neu B mention below, I think this issue should be put under the microscope.

No there was no nudity.

and i highly doubt any of them would commit suicide. their 30-31 years old now.

and no it's not revenge, i'll be uploading the whole day of the end of school, so it's not going to be just a video of them dancing and that's it, maybe to include that dance, maybe it wasn't as bad as i thought since i haven't seen it in years, but it was pretty cringe worthy to say the least.
