RAID Array Question - Failed Drive

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Fristly, please understand that I have little if no understanding of replacing drives in RAID systems. I have only been in my job for a couple of months and I'm trying to find a solution for my manager. We have a RAID array in a SAN that has a failed 2.5" 500GB SAS HDD. (HP Part Number: 605832-001). This drive is either unavailable to buy in the UK, or extremely expensive from the likes of Amazon.

Can this faulty 500GB SAS drive be replaced with any other drive, including from other manufacturers (such as Seagate, etc)? If so, does it also have to be 500GB, or can it be a different size? What happens if a different drive make/model or size is installed into the RAID array?

Thanks.

Personally I would use the exact same new drive that is failed in it, it is likely tested and vetted to work with that SAN.

Secondly, if your company can afford a SAN, then they can afford to replace a bad drive in it. If they can't they need to sell the SAN on EBay, and get something they can afford to maintain.

It's not worth risking your data over. I'd buy a spare one so that you can swap the next drive that fails, the longer you leave it the more vulnerable your data becomes.

If it is anything like the Dell Equalogic SAN's which only accept drives with  Dell firmware installed, you would be best to buy the exact same replacement drive or one certified by HP for that system.  I only say HP as the part number is from them so I would say it's an HP SAN?

I wouldn't risk any of my customers who have a SAN with a non-certified drive.
