Text box when posting or reply scrolls endless horizontal vs word wrap?

Recommended Posts

So not sure if something changed on the site, or something changed with firefox? But I don't recall having the text box scroll and scroll and scroll horizontally before. Now if you type it just goes on and on and on and never wraps the words until you post?

I don't know if I changed habits and use to hit return all the time when got to the end, but would really like to change it. Didn't it use to scroll just vertically?

So how wide will the text box go? Can I set something to change this in my preferences?

It is has been bugging me for days, I don't feel like I changed my typing habits. I don't recall hitting return every time I got to the end? of the scroll box? I type very fast and some of my posts can get a bit long and its easy to proof read if I don't have to preview or scroll back and forth, etc.

Oh, you have this issue as well? I thought I had changed something in Firefox to cause it to happen, and I was too occupied over the weekend to install another browser to see if the problem continued. I'll do that now.

Firefox 36.0.1.

Ok, maybe I won't test this in another browser - every time I go to the chrome website my computer crashes. :blink::laugh:

Since Frank isn't having the issue with Safari, I'm guessing it's specific to Firefox?

So is its some change in firefox that can be turned off, fixed.. Don't really want to change browser. Don't have it on other forums I post on. Just here on neowin has it start to become annoying.

Yup running 36.0.1

Guess will start trolling around the settings. Glad to see someone else noticed it and finds it annoying as well.

Does it also happen in rich text mode? Seems you have bbcode mode turned on there and word wrap may have changed in a later build of Firefox? :s

Rich text mode for me (Fx 37 beta) seems to work ok, it's just bbcode mode that goes weird with the scrolling. Thought it was an addon acting up or something. Prefer bbcode mode myself, I'm always breaking quote tags and such in rich text.

It seems in it does not happen with the rich editor, but I am not a fan of that.  Let me see if I switch it back and forth what happens but with this reply it worked as you would expect it too..

edit:  So yeah its clearly something with the bbcode mode, here is example of it switching.

Guess I can leave that on.. But not really a fan ;)

Firefox is actually working as intended, while in bbcode mode the textarea has the property:

white-space: pre;
...meaning it's not supposed to wrap (not sure why it wraps in Trident/Webkit) if wrapping is the desired behaviour I believe it should be:

white-space: pre-wrap;

Ah so if they change it to pre-wrap; it will work like it does in the rich editor?

Yeah, if you change the property value from pre to pre-wrap in Firefox (mandatory gif :p):

It looks like the behaviour was updated to correctly follow the CSS specification in Firefox 36 https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=82711 (it was buggy before) that's why it has only just started happening. Webkit and Trident still seem to have the bug.
