Windows 10 build 10041 - System/hard locks

Recommended Posts

We had some users in the Windows 10 TP thread with this issue.

What happens:

The system will hard lock and the keyboard and mouse will stop working. The audio continues to play any music you have playing. I have even had a TeamSpeak conversation during this hard lock.

A forced shutdown is the only way to get the computer up and running again.

This seems to mostly trigger when I am both playing a game (WoW) and having Chrome up and running at the same time. As far as I can remember it have never happened while only running the game with no other software running (beside stuff in systray that is).

My system

Asus P85 Plus

i7 4770 (haswell)

Geforce GTX 780

Nvidia drivers: 349.90 (default from WU)

I upgarded from build 99026, which had the 349.65 drivers from Nvidia.

Diagnostic so far

I have not figured out the root cause. What I have done is the following:

- Removed any Nvidia drivers that is currently installed on the system

- Reinstall the latest drivers from WU (349.90)

In the event log I keep getting these kind of errors. I'm not sure if they are related at all, since they didn't happen during the last system lock.

The logs shows several items/files with the same message.

The Open Procedure for service "usbhub" in DLL "C:\WINDOWS\system32\usbperf.dll" failed. Performance data for this service will not be available. The first four bytes (DWORD) of the Data section contains the error code.

I know there are more users with this error. Let's see if we can figure this one out. If not I will try a fresh install at a later date of build 10041.

I just did a clean install from the ESD to ISO I converted. I was running the leaked 10036 before and was prompted to update but just prefer ISO clean installs.

All seems good here but only played with it for 30mins last night.

Thought it was only me!!

I am having the same issue. Complete lock up of machine, but music keeps playing. Sometimes it happens immediately after boot and sometimes it is about half an hour or so before it happens.

I'm going to reload tonight with 9926 then update to 10041 again and see what happens.

I have the same deal breaker issue here. What is more, even after a clean ESD converted into ISO fresh install, I keep on getting them from time to time. I have not been able to pinpoint the root cause as of yet. They seem to happen in a random way which makes it more difficult to track them down.

In a previous session I played Unreal Tournament Prealpha for over half an hour without any hiccups, then I was installing Uplay while browsing with Firefox and boom! Hard reset and so on.

I hope we can figure this out sooner rather than later.

In the meantime, it would be a good idea if you tell Microsoft about it. I even opened a thread on their formus (you can check it here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/forum/insider_wintp-insider_perf/build-10041-is-there-anyone-else-suffering-hard/14b9b25e-970a-400a-9f9c-615a00d2e537)

The more people chime in about it, the better!

My specs:

ASUS Z87-K

Intel i7 4770

16 GB DDR3

Radeon R9 290X (latest drivers from WU)

SSD Samsung 840 EVO 500GB

Cheers!

I have updated some chipset drivers and bios, so I'm waiting for any issues to appear again.

Next step is to disable HWA in my browser. Because I have not experienced this when only having a game up and running. So far only with a browser (chrome) running at the same time.

I have to check, but I think every time it happened on my end I had Firefox running with Hardware acceleration on. I'll check disabling such thing from Firefox and AMD

mine did the same, only with a fresh 9926 install, it would just randomly hang and lockup, then reboot. If I was lucky, I might get to use my system for 10 minutes, but almost every time I tried to bring up the start menu, my cursor would disappear, the system would freeze, then reboot itself. I had all of my drivers from lenovo installed (the most current ones were all for windows 8.1), but it still happened. I ended up going back to 8.1 just so I could use my laptop. Been rock-solid stable ever since. I think I'm just going to wait until 10 is finished cooking before I try it out again. I am in the insider program, but I'm not going to risk it, especially because 10 wiped out my recovery partition, and it was a PITA to get to 8 back (OEM Core).

Oddly enough, that never happened to me with build 9926.

But our scenario may be slightly different. I, for one, am using a fresh installation and when the system gets frozen, not only does the mouse cursor not disappear, the system does not restart by itself either.

Tons of problems with this build. VERY buggy. I have no idea how Microsoft plans to get this out in the summer, its a fantasy as this is feeling alpha quality.

Lots of freezups here too, even outside of games. Horrible.

Disabling HWA in browser does not help.

Sadly I think  I will have to roll back to the last build. I have raids to do and I can't have random dc's.

But I will check into this thread and hopefully I can assist with some ideas on what to check for.

This new build totally trashed  my Stream 7.

Registry errors right and left. Unresponsive lock screens (keeps telling me to hold down the windows key and press the power button to unlock), no on screen keyboard button. start menu won't even open. If I open the recycle bin and click computer and then settings it just goes away.

Its Pretty much hosed

I should also point out it build 10041 upgraded a pretty much clean install of the last build. I maybe played with it 5 times and never install any software on the old build.

I'd love to do a clean install if we had an iso.

am I the only one expecting a 3GB day one patch. To me it feels like Windows 10 needs another year of work.

Getting the same thing from time to time, Hard drive sits at 100% and everything freezes. Tried on several drives including an SSD. Still randomly does it, there isn't a process I can pin point that causes it

Not sure if that was a question or a statement, but i'm in the process of creating an ISO to try it with. I'll report back.

To be fair, you are using a fast ring build, so bugs can (and will) happen. You may wish to stick to slow ring builds like 9926 if stability and support is a concern.

At the same time I am running 10041 without issues, at least after fixing the network (known issue) and rolling back a graphics driver which causes my R9 290 to run at unstable clock speeds (though not exclusive to 10041).

I know and that's why I'll keep on looking into it trying to find out what's causing it.

I can do better than this...

Windows Update automatically installed an updated driver for my GTX760 4GB, I'm running an Intel Skulltrail DB5400 with 2 x QX9775, an Asus U3S6 card for Sata 3 and USB 3 and after restarting for the Nvidia update, now my Skulltrail's onboard usb doesn't work, my usb from my Asus card doesn't work and my network has been disabled.

This is a serious balls up by Microsoft and Nvidia and I'm not happy about it at all.

The leaked copy of Windows 10 ran better than this "official" preview release and this b0rked driver just about takes the biscuit.

I've got a USB keyboard and mouse so can't do jack, there's no safe mode option when booting because Microsoft in their infinite wisdom seem to have removed it, holding down F8 does nothing and the only safe mode options seem to be restarting to safe mode when you're already in Windows, not easy to do without a mouse and keyboard. Apparently this was an "improvement" brought in with Windows 8 for a faster boot, not very helpful when your problem is getting Windows to work.

I'm running Windows 10 on my laptop which also had an Nvidia update for the inbuilt card but this still works fine, I'm gonna try making a recovery drive and see if that will boot and let me do some sort of system restore, although I don't think Microsoft has included the option to disable a particular Windows update which, if some of them are breaking the OS like this, is ludicrous.

Oh yeah, just to put the icing on the cake, it locks up at shutdown also.

Anyone know where I can download a legit Windows 8.1 iso because I have all my ISOs on a hard drive on the main PC which obviously I can't burn with no mouse or keyboard functioning. GG Microsoft.

Yes, I know it's a "preview" but that doesn't excuse this inconvenience.

Well the recovery usb is completely useless.

Troubleshoot>Advanced Options>System Restore

"To use System Restore, you must specify which Windows installation to restore. Restart this computer, select an operating system and then select System Restore."

Yeah, except there's no menu to choose which OS now.

Troubleshoot>Roll back to the previous build

"We ran into a problem and won't be able to take you back to the previous build. Try refreshing your current build instead"

Trying the refresh gives..

"The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again"

Erm.....Eh!?!?? Does it mean my SSD, the recovery media, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10? No useful info whatsoever.

Troubleshoot>Reset your PC

"Unable to reset your PC. A required drive partition is missing."

That's nice, well I didn't delete any partitions so....erm....WTF?!

Troubleshoot>Reinstall Windows 10 Technical Preview with this media

Just does nothing and goes back to the main menu straight away.

Startup Repair made no difference at all

Back to Windows 8.1 for me I think, I'll wait till the final release and final (TESTED) drivers. Now to try to hunt down a Windows 8.1 legit iso.

Can you elaborate on your problem with the graphics card? I also have a Radeon 290 and I'm using the drivers from Windows Update. However, I'm monitoring it with GPU-Z and I don't see anything strange with its clocks.

Thanks.

Just chiming in as another one affected. It's only happened when gaming so far though.

Thanks for sharing. It hasn't happened to me while playing games. At least, not yet. I managed to install Uplay and Watch Dogs, though it was a matter of patience and played for over an hour without problems. I've uninstalled Sapphire TRIXX v4.8.2 and I've disabled hardware acceleration on Firefox and all video enhancements on Catalyst.

I'll continue testing.

I had a lot of issues with drivers post-update. My display was failing to be detected correctly (1080p / 60Hz ~> 480i @ 25Hz), then HDMI audio broke, then USB devices started to malfunction / fail to detect on boot and then my Atheros on-board LAN went walk about. BSOD's started occurring after that.

I removed & reinstalled all drivers that required an installation and it's been more or less OK since. I would like to do a reinstall of the OS but haven't had the time.

Getting system freezes here as well, which Nvidia driver should I install? WU doesn't have any new drivers.

This is a disaster of a release, there's nothing new and it broke so much.

Hey, guys!

I've managed to repair some system files and haven't experienced any system hard locks ever since (I keep on testing with fingers crossed, though). I've created a thread on Windows Insider Forums explaining how to do so: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/forum/insider_wintp-insider_install/how-to-repair-your-system-files-using-dism-and-sfc/1021b42a-09ff-41a0-a95a-48f3ee3ae699

Hope it helps! Let me know if you find any problems following those steps.

Regards!
