My nephew just bought an xbox one is it normal for games install to be like over 6 hours long?

Recommended Posts

Hi!

My nephew just bought an xbox one and since he has a crappy internet connection he came to my home to install AC Unity. He rented the game thinking he could install from the disc and play with the code he got for free with the console. It appears he can't do that but it doesn't really matter for now since he has the disc rented for a week. My internet connection is capped (and not really fast) so i don't want to install from the internet so gonna install from the disc and he will play with the disc for the next week.

So i started the installation from the disc and it tells me i need to download a patch which is fine i can spend a couple of GBs on it just not 40. The problem is after 15-20 minutes the installation from the disc is at 3% which means it will take over 5-6 hours from the disc. How big is the patch actually? For a reason i don't understand MS doesn't seem to think it's important to tell us how much we are downloading and at which speed ... good job nice UI /s. Is it normal for installations from disc to be that long or is it because Ubisoft fails and the patch is like 20-30GB? We don't even know if the installation process is copying from disc or downloading something ... If the patch is so big i'll stop that my cap is too low to download that much data for a ***** game.

Installing a game from the disc on the XBox One is a PAIN, it takes HOURS to install...  I just don't know what it's doing but it's ridiculous.

It goes way quicker if you disconnect from the internet before installing, otherwise it stops the installation to download and install update silently. That is what is causing it to take hours. I am surprised it prompted you for an update. I have never had that happen while installing from a disk.

Yeah but can i know if the game is downloading from internet or the disc? I really can't afford to waste 20-40GB of my cap on this. I've read on the internet some sources saying the patch is 40GB and others say the patch is 6.7GB.

The game is "ready to play" right now and the installation process is at 5% (after maybe 40 minutes  ). Can my nephew return home and continue installing it from the disc and not have to download anything? Is it done downloading the patch since it is ready to play? They really need to add more information about the installation process ... how much do we need to download, at which speed are we downloading, are we copying from disc or downloading a patch?

If it's copying from the disc and is done downloading the patch then fine he will return home and resume the installation from the disc and it will take 5 hours. Ridiculous but well ... it's not my console so i don't care. Just want to be sure i'm not curently downloading a 20GB patch ...

I don't think it was a prompt. But i remember seeing a message telling me it would download a patch as part of the installation process.

Ok it appears it was downloading a big patch cause i cancelled the installation, went offline and started the installation again and now it is going fast.

So the patch is really that big? Wow Ubi fails even more than i thought. They really expect people to download patches over 20-30GB to play their offline games ... good job Ubi. 5% after around 40MIN either this patch was really big or MS servers are slow. I think it's probably the first option.

Well yes option 1 to some extent, but as you said your internet isn't very fast...40GB for me would only take less than an hour to do the whole lot...and I highly doubt the patch is 40GB, more likely the 6.7GB you found online (maybe the full game is 40GB, but patch will be smaller).
6.7GB is on the upper end of patch sizes, but not beyond reason.

Maybe time for an internet upgrade to something a bit faster/unlimited cap? not sure about Canada, but in the UK caps are becoming quite rare, only the most basic packages have them and no one ever seems to go for them (I don't know anyone with a cap).

Can't be 6.7GB only. It takes around 1h30-1h45 with my connection to download a 6.5-7GB game over Steam. So unless MS servers are slow it should not have been at 5% only after 40 minutes.

Why would i upgrade my connection? I'm a PC gamer and for now it's perfectly fine. Games are never more than 20GB on PC and it takes around 5 hours to download 20GB which is perfectly fine for me.

Anyway we installed from the disk without being connected to the internet and he will play the game unpatched for now. It's a crap game anyway lol he will probably be done with it fast.

Sorry yes, mis-read the start, thought it was your internet that was slow when actually it was your nephew's.

So yes probably MS's servers.

I'd agree a lot of PC games aren't over 20GB but less and less that's the case, BF4 and Titanfall are both over 60GB. Latest CoD is 40GB.

But if you never hit your cap fair enough.

I just picked up my Xbox One today and am downloading AC unity with the code I got. It's a 39.6GB download iirc. I think when you grab it from online it should be the newest version at the time with any patches ubisoft has applied. The disc version is the original, so you're going to have patches to d/l for sure.

Anyways, my download isn't done but it's more because my internet connection has been dropping left and right for the past two days which doesn't help at all

I think it's slow because of the process they have, when it's installing from the disc it also applies, or tries to, patches at the same time instead of installing from the disc first and then updating. MS has admitted the process needs fixing, I expect something in a future update, maybe the second update for April?

On the xbox 360 and Steam it is the latest version so probably the same with the xbox one. I would download the game for him but i have a 100GB limit and my month just started so 40GB for a crap game i wont play is a no go ;) 100GB is enough for my needs for now so i don't upgrade but if i ever buy a next gen console i will surely upgrade my connection.

Not sure the process needs any fixing. It is okay to download the updates and update the game as you install it. My connection while not terribad is nothing great either. It's 1MB sec download and capped at 100GB. But more information about what is happening would be great. Like copying files from disc, downloading a patch (1.9GB/13Gb done at 938MB/sec), applying updates, etc etc. The only information we have right now is at which % of the whole process we are there'S not even an estimate of the time it will take anyway not with the default UI.

I had a similar issue this week. I bought Saints Row 4 Re-Elected with Gat Out of Hell, once the installation got to installing update it got stuck alternating between "Updating" and "Queued", and didn't move from 64%. My workaround was to disconnect network, install Gat Out Of Hell first, connect back to network, run it, update it, then install and run Saints Row 4 the same way, and update that.

The achievements system, and the installation/patch combo processes REALLY need fixing, not all these crappy cosmetic changes like wallpapers and transparent tiles. Dashboard wallpapers to me are useless as you can't see them properly anyhow. They're fine for a PC desktop, but not a Metro style Start dashboard on a game console.

What issues do you have with the achievements system, if I may ask? Just wondering.

Where they don't unlock when they should, yet the achievement tracker goes to 100%. I'm surprised you have to ask, it's a massive widespread problem! I do achievement solutions on TrueAchievements.com, the most common complaint is achievements not unlocking. Turn the console off, then on again or wait a few hours, bam, they appear, and gamerscore updates! The achievement system has an online check thing AFAIK, the Achievement app tracks it then should unlock the cheevo, but it doesn't in most cases. Microsoft really need to make it fully offline like the 360.

Indeed could be related to your internet connection, even with a disk (as it looks for the newest patches/version). Longest game install (disk or digital) took about 45 minutes for me. Now they are usually instantly playable (not all of the game), and is installed and downloaded in 20 minutes.

Guess I don't experience it enough to notice ^^ running XO since launch day.
