My web hosting experience

Question

Hey guys. Im here to leave a review of my current webmaster experience. I used to be Host Gator until my website exploded. I had over a few hundred thousand visitors daily as I run an eCommerce shop and a Wordpress blog for it as well as a forum. Host Gator was all good until I used up too much resources and then I got booted off.

After that, I went with Layer Serve (layerserve.com), their support was great and I was able to use less resources because of the way their servers were set up (I'm guessing). I've been with them for a while now and I don't regret the move. Everything was successful and the help was great. Their webmaster tools were complete and easy to use and they also provide free DDoS protection on their servers. My load time for my website is fast by around 0.03 seconds to 2.45 seconds depending on the day and location. So far, that's where I'm at. Maybe I'll purchase my own server and colocate it but for now, Layer Serve is the best for me. That's my review of them.

Have you also heard of or considered using Cloudflare? (www.cloudflare.com) They also provide great protection and CDN. It may also off load most of the bandwidth to Cloudflare servers so you won't get booted off anymore.

Ahh, that sounds good. There's a CloudFlare option in Layer Server's cPanel. I'm going to try to set it up from there. Thanks for that.

I was using Host Gator for a site a few years back when it launched. It got on the gaming subreddit and exploded (100,000 views overnight). I woke up to an unpleasant call from Host Gator at 3:00 in the morning telling me I had to either pay them for a better server or leave their service. I ended up going to Dreamhost and left them because Drupal was performing poorly. Last year I decided to get a VPS from DigitalOcean. It takes a little bit of work to get it up and running but have not had any issues and now loads in about a second. In the future you may want to look into a VPS from them since their pricing is really cheap.
