SSHD: how does it work?

Recommended Posts

I just saw an advert of a SSHD - Solid State Hybrid Drive.

This might be a good idea for my other notebook.

But how does it technically work? Is this one drive/two drives in device manager?

And when installing Windows - in one drive - how does it know which bits and bytes to put on the "SSD-part" and which other on the "HHD-part".

Or can I just install Windows and use the rest of my documents, and the drive 'automagically' knows which files to put in NAND and other on the regular HDD.

Assuming this is your "other" notebook and you might not require lots of storage for it, I'd probably suggest sacrificing space for a smaller SSD but at least it's a proper solid state drive.

This is all down to your personal needs and whether or not your value storage over speed, or vice versa.

If you do decide to get an SSD I believe crucials MX200 offers good value.

It'll look and perform like a standard HDD.. I had a hybrid in my macbook a few years a go and to be honest I didn't see a massive performance boost.

The idea is that it moves regularly used files (windows, etc..) to the SSD part and other files to the HDD part, it is totally transparent so you don't need to do anything or even realise it is happening, supposedly giving the best of both worlds.. i'm not sure whether it did, the performance boost is not even close to that of a full SSD drive.
