BMW 5 Series F10 - 2010 to 2012 Opinions

Recommended Posts

Ok, figured some of you guys/gals have one or know someone that does and as such I want to hear all the negative stories you've had to deal with or heard about. Finding the "good" info is always easy (PR team does a good job of that).

Im thinking about getting a older model (pre-LCI or facelift). I know about the engine (N63) in the 550 issues and thats not where im going so not worries about that too much. I also know that some people tend to want to stay away from earlier years because of bugs in production that gets ironed out later on in life (mentioned to get later than Sept 2010 build years for this reason).

Also getting stuck between Diesel and Gas (im in Europe now so got those nice options :p ). Seems Diesel is the clear winner but i guess there are other costs that i may not be aware of. Eg. Did you know Taxes on Diesel is higher in Germany? This is your yearly tax paid for having a vehicle. Diesel however gets better mileage and has more torque :D!

So what else is there to stay away from and options that are worth it to consider in normal driving or with family driving. Eg. Power Lift gate and comfort access is handy when you have the kid in hand and want to open the trunk to put in the buggy/stroller. :p

I have 2011 F10.

It's a 2.0 Diesel model, i would either go for the 530 or 520 dependent on what you need.

Its's a great car and I bought it new from the dealership and had 0 issues ;)

Diesel vs. Gasoline. This depends on how much you travel I think. If you use it mainly to go to work, go back home do some shopping in between - it's a good idea to go for Gasoline engines because they have no additional DSP filters which could cause the exhaust to get cluttered up if you don't burn in the car often. If you do a lot of business travels in the car - Diesel would be a better option I think. Unless you want to have the Diesel sounds ;)

  • 4 weeks later...

I have the 525d 2010.

Personally I wish I brought the 530 or higher.

The only gripes i have is the Satnav takes about a minute to start up, so it's a bit slow to enter a destination.

Make sure you get one with xenon, I've got the normal ones and I do a bit of night driving and it's pretty poor.

Get a back up cam if you can, it makes reversing much easier.

The ride can be a little bumpy at times too.

Otherwise it's a pretty neat car.

Get one with at least the professional navigation, so you can at lest plug in a usb stick to listen to music. Cos mine doesn't support Bluetooth audio streaming via the iPhone

Sad times but good times too. Lol

Wife liked a 2013 F30 3 Series sedan more so that's what we got. Pretty good and only 25K KM (15K miles) Well maintained and no issues shown in its history. Was owned by a bank as a company car to pick up guests from the airport in Berlin. She kept saying how the 5 was too big when its like 30cm longer and like 15cm wider. Oh well... Guess to please the wife we just let this go for now.

Maybe in a few years I'll get a 2014 then as those will be cheaper :)
