Germanwings/Lufthansa A320 down in France

Recommended Posts

Small correction: The plane was run by Germanwings, the low-cost subsidiary of Lufthansa.

A tragic accident in either case.

man this is why i no longer fly

Why? It's statistically the safest form of transport by a country mile. Just when a plane comes down it makes every news outlet as so many are usually impacted by the accident. You don't read about the countless people who get hit by cars or buses, or have accidental deaths in their homes.

Flying is safe.

I saw this come up in my news feed. It'll be interesting to find out what happens. I'm always surprised when a 320 goes down. Hopefully it's not another Angle of Attack probes issue, or fan cowl doors left open again.

I believe that ferries/cruise ships trump air travel for safest form of travel.

Possibly, but good luck getting a boat across land  :D

Damn.. I fly almost every week. There have been too many air accidents this past few months.

I agree, I fly for work too and so does most of my coworkers and getting nervous here a bit.

It says in the article posted here that it declared a distress (presumably a mayday) at 5,000ft, but it said it was over the Alps having taken off from Barcelona and flying to D

All of the media coverage is worrying people, me included.. I love flying I just have the 'what if..' feeling which makes me not want to do it...it's ok saying statistically it's the safest way of traveling but realistically you have a much greater chance of surviving a car crash than you do a plane crash.

How many air accidents in the last few months? How many flights took place safely during that time? Now let's look at your drive to the airport. How many car crashes occurred during the same time, and how many car journeys took place successfully?

It is known that your are orders of magnitude more likely to die driving to the airport than you are flying to your destination.

Not sure about the article written but if you look at the flight chart, it was at 40,000ft then started a dive and it was doing 400+ knots the whole way so doesnt seem like the decended to 5,000 ft to me, seems its like the "fell" down to that altitude.

Lets hope we find some people alive however and the blackboxes fast!

I agree with you 100% but i guess if you take it statistically it would be more scary. Few years ago 1 plane crashed every 6 months... now lets say 3 crash this year in the same 6 month stretch. From 1 to 3 is not a lot but percentage wise we are now 200% higher.

So yes, while im not worried enough to cancel my next flight to the UK or France even (some on GermanWings few weeks ago)... an increase is an increase regardless.

All that said, prayers goes out to the persons involved (both victims and families alike )

In 2014 the number of fatal crashes involving civil aircraft with 19 or more passenger seats totalled... 6. That's worldwide. On aircraft accidents involving a fatality, your odds of surviving are 24%. If it was a controlled ditching which led to a fatality, your odds of surviving are 53%.

For cars, your odds of dying in a car crash over the span of your life falls somewhere between 1 in 80 and 1 in 240 depending on where in the world you live. On an aircraft, the odds of dying are worldwide 1 in 8,673,771 over your lifetime. Compared to the odds of you dying in a plane crash, you're walking a veritable tightrope every time you enter your car.

I've been flying every week for the past 6 or 7 months, and now I'm flying twice in one day. What will be will be I guess.

All you can hope is that they were killed quickly and didn't suffer.

I have flown many times per day (up to 5) up to 5 times a week for the past 4 years. I'm still here. I expect I'll still be here in another 35 years too. Flying is so very safe.

Thank you for the encouraging words.. As a frequent flier myself.. I admit I do sometimes get scared when there is mid air turbulence these days.

The last 4 incidences, were they all air buses?

Yeh flying is still the safest way to travel (maybe a ferry as bonalste says, but these are far too limited in destination)

Its just when a car crashes its 1 or 2 people killed.

With a plane its 150-200 maybe even more.

The other reason for the media attention and shock is that it happens so little, if I told you a car crash just happened I don't think anyone would be particularly surprised, they happen all the time.

I tell you a plane crashed you get shocked because it happens much more infrequently, its like not having the sun rise tomorrow, we're not expecting it so that would sure make the news, I report the sun did rise and no one cares and its a given.

Now I'm not saying car crashes are a given, its obviously sad and tragic if anyone dies in a car accident, but unfortunately they are far more common so we're less shocked by it.

Regardless its a sad day and my thoughts go out to those effected.
