Popular music streaming service Spotify has just launched its first-ever games console app - and it's exclusive to Sony's PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 for the time being.

"PlayStation have gaming exclusivity," Murray Pannell, UK marketing director for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, confirmed to Eurogamer at a preview of the app last week. And how long does the exclusivity period last? "That's to be decided exactly," he confessed, "but certainly for the foreseeable."

Sigh. I need this *so* much for my Xbox :(

I actually read the above and thought, do people actually want things like Spotify enough to warrant an exclusivity deal? Guess you answered that.

I don't think I've ever understood why some people listen to music whilst they play but maybe I'm in the minority.

I don't do it often, but I also don't watch YouTube while playing games :) yet I still use the YouTube app pretty often. I'm a heavy Spotify user and it'd be nice and convenient to use it in the living room.

Good point, I'm making the assumption that the only time you use an Xbox is to game.

so, Spotify > XBox Music?

I don't know if its better... but I know a lot of people with Spotify and absolutely no-one with Xbox music. I think Spotify is probably more popular because its been around for a long time and on peoples smartphones.

I use to listen to music all the time when I was playing Pro Evo/Fifa usually because you don't really need to listen to the game. More so when I was obsessed with the Pro Evo master league.

But a part from that I never really bothered. Not entirely sure what benefit it is to Sony/Spotify(suppose sony paid them i guess) to have it as an exclusive.

With Sony scrapping their music service spotify doesn't have to compete with any other service on PSN.

I guess i just do not understand the point of using a game console to listen to music.

There was a time where custom soundtracks were allowed.

And when playing sports games, the in game commentary becomes wash, rinse, and repeat.

I would just launch my own music, and just enjoy playing the game and listening to music at same time.

I also I have a decent sound plate for my tv, and when doing some cleaning, I listen to music as well.

For some reason I thought this was coming MAY 30th not MARCH.

My understanding was Spotify was pretty big in Europe. It's like 5th or so in the U.S. behind Pandora, iHeartRadio, etc.

I don't think I've ever understood why some people listen to music whilst they play but maybe I'm in the minority.

I don't listen to music while I play but my consoles are connected to my A/V receiver and thus my living room speakers and such. As a result I've never even bothered to hook the AM/FM Antenna on my reciever and instead when we want to listen to music while we work around the house and such we launch Pandora on the PS3. This way we get better quality music that more tailored to what we like then a standard radio and the speakers are much better.

Unfortunately I still use the PS3 for that to this day (which is accomblished via the crappy web browser) because despite the PS4 supposedly having a better browser it doesn't work with the Pandora site for some reason (one or the other is blocking?) I'm not about to switch to Spotify so it looks like the PS3 will remain the radio for the time being.

It absolutely is, my misses and all her family use it, but she tends to use it for music at the Gym or when she is getting ready.

I think I replied saying the same above but, I guess I just assumed that if a PS4 is on, its being used for gaming whereas today's Consoles are often a little more than that.

Does the free version of spotify even work on the PS4?

More than 1.5M people installed @Spotify on @PlayStation in 24 hours. As gamers, that

Didn't know this was for PS3 too, that's pretty cool!

Depends; sometimes you may like a game, but not so much the soundtrack. Or maybe you might feel like certain music to a certain atmosphere. I mostly use instrumental over my game music, with the exception of Diablo 3 which is open to some good metal when playing. (Judas Priest's Hammer and the Anvil comes to mind when playing a Crusader)

It's interesting what you can come up with, if you're creative enough. I of course only do this after spending enough time with the game that I feel comfortable experimenting. Otherwise, my music collection would never grow.

And yes, Spotify is absolutely awesome. I waited patiently for it to come to the States. :D

I would love this on the XBOX, For people not understanding the need for it. The XBOX is a media center, I would love to be able to have the option to play the music through the Big TV in the room.

Xbox music is not free.

I was just talking about the services, not what is available on consoles.

Edit: never mind, didn't realise MS scrapped the free web player  Definitely Spotify > Xbox Music then

Honest question -- Pandora vs. Spotify?

I've had a Pandora subscription for a while now on my phone, mostly to get rid of the ads while I play the classical station for my son while he's having one of his bad nights (seizures often keep him up for multiple nights in a row).  Also a few stations to listen to at work, but I also have an ass-ton of music loaded on my phone too.

Anyway,

I'm pretty happy with Pandora and might only use streaming music on PS4 sparingly, but just from the perspective of the apps, is one better?  Would it be worth it to switch over?

My understanding (having not used Spotify recently) is that Spotify is more playlist focused.

So you can set up playlists and share them with your friends and family.  Likewise artists and other "curators" can set up playlists and share them so you can pick "curators" you like.

Pandora on the other hand is all about their "music genome" algorithms where you don't set up specific playlists but just try to train channels on the kinds of music you like and it tries to play music that is similar to what you've told it you liked.

Apparently Spotify added a "Radio" feature at some point after I tried it which is a bit closer to Pandora from what I can tell (not having tried it) but I don't think think the "similar" matching is as complex.  I'm not really sure (maybe some more familiar can chime in) as it was added after I tried Spotify.  Wikipedia has the extremely helpful "Radio differs from its competitor, Pandora" but doesn't go into exactly how they are different.

I personally preferred Pandora when I did my comparison (again, before Spotify Radio) because I have ZERO interest in manually setting up playlists and my friends/family don't have similar music taste so I really don't care to hear playlists set up by them.  Also I'm not interested in some random person picking the music as is the case for "Curators" so I'd rather an algorithm try to match songs to what I've actually said I liked and tailored to me specifically instead of just general genre/artist channels.  I have several channels set up and trained over years on Pandora (Hard, Soft, Instrumental, various Holiday Channels, etc.) and even if Spotify Radio is similar it would have to be significantly better for me to throw all that training out and start over from scratch.

If you'd prefer setting up and sharing playlists though or would rather have a "Curator" provide music for you (similar to a Radio DJ) instead of having to train a channel over time then Spotify may be a better option.

The Spotify radio feature is pretty similar but nowhere near effective as Pandora's. For whatever reason, they pull suggestions from a very small pool of related bands. You can rate them to refine it like Pandora though.

Both services aren't very comparable outside of this feature though. Spotify allows you to listen to any artist, album or track when you like. My experience of Pandora isn't as good as others, but from what I remember you only have control to skip to the next song and liking/disliking to further improve your personal algorithm.

I'd like Google Play Music support, but it'll never happen.

Google seem to be the only ones allowing you to upload a lot of your own music :( (20,000 songs or it might be more now).
