The new MacBook with Retina display was announced by Apple at an event earlier this month. The new laptop is the thinnest and lightest notebook released by Apple thus far. But, for the first time, in order to obtain the svelte and light design, Apple had to compromise by ditching its often used Intel i5 processor and instead opting to power their new device with Intel's latest fan-less Core M Broadwell chip.
According to MacRumors, the new benchmarks put the 2015 MacBook on par in terms of sheer numbers with a 2011 i7 MacBook Air. But, the true power of the new Intel chip cannot be determined solely by the GeekBench benchmarking tool because it does not measure the graphics capability of the new chip. In order to judge the true performance of the new MacBook, a more comprehensive test will have to be performed that tests the GPU and improved SSD.
While this offering from Apple might be tempting to some, Microsoft also announced a new product this week in the form of the Surface 3. While the Surface 3 might not be of the same caliber as the new MacBook it is still an intriguing device. Both devices will be available for purchase in April. The MacBook will start at $1299, while the Surface 3 will start at $499.
