For those who are eager to get their hands on this device, Costco has it available for pre-order as part of a bundle that includes Office 365 Personal. You can choose between the 2GB/64GB memory/storage option for $599.99, or the higher end 4GB/128GB memory/storage option for $699.99. Both options come with an Intel Atom Quad Core processor, a silver Surface Pen, a black Type Cover, and one year of Office 365 Personal. I never quite understood why the cover doesn't come with it since MS is marketing these as laptop replacement

According to the Surface team, people want different color Type Covers and keeping track of all the Surface models and different color Type Cover bundles would be a SKU nightmare.

I got a free type cover for my Surface and have only used it a couple of times.  I intend to get a Surface Pro in the next 12 months and doubt I'll bother with the type cover when I do.  The Surface is a tablet that can replace a laptop but doesn't have to.  It's perfectly functional as a tablet and there's no point forcing people to buy a keyboard that they may not need.

That's perfectly reasonable IMO.
