Cases: Cube vs Tower

Recommended Posts

Well, I've posted quite a bit on here, with a few different topics. I'm trying to gather enough information to build a few new computers.

I've been looking at a Super Tower for my new Desktop, but a friend pointed out that a cube could be better for me. So, without further delays, here's the two cases.

Whats your opinions on Cube vs Tower?

vs

Space isn't an issue. One of these cases will house my server, while I'll leave the option to my brother on which case he wants. I just want to know every ones opinion on them.

How could you need this many bays for your desktop?

  • 4 External 5.25" Drive Bays
  • 9 Internal 3.5" Drive Bays

Really??  What are you going to put into that space??  At $339.99

In all reality, I was thinking about using that space for watercooling unit or my toolbox kit that I have.

So you have money to burn like ww, where are you going to put your usb stick gold storage box?  Let me guess all of this is tax deductible as well ;)

Dude 9 3.5" bays -- for a desktop?  Thought you were going to build a server so you would have NAS.. Why would you need 9 bays in your workstation for?  The amount of storage that could be put into 9 bays is, lets call it 4TBx8 = 32 TB.. That sure is a lot of porn!!  Do you even have the sata ports on your mb to connect that many drives?

Its your money - but I think a nice case could be found for half that cost that is better suited.  The cube looks more reasonable for bays, etc.  And it has lots of cooling for all the overclocking I guess you do if you need to water cool your rigs, etc.

I was looking at the cube as a potential server case, but I'll look for different cases. The bays aren't a huge "need", it was more of an expansion possibility. I've done a bit of reading on 6TB drives, and they seem to have a high failure rate, at least Seagate does. Like we discussed in our PM conversation, I'll probably start with 1 or 2 4TB drives and see how things go from there, with an M.2 as my OS drive. I do have money to burn, but I do have a budget. I take care of my monthly needs first, and I stash an extra 100$ or $200 away in my "piggy" bank, for things that pop up. For example, my keyboard, which has lasted me since 2006, I'm replacing next week. I've had the Original G15 Keyboard with 18 G Keys & a foldable screen for about 8 years now. It functions, its just has some quirks to it. I'll be buying a Logitech G910 Orion Keyboard.

Since you want an opinion: Out of the two I personally like the aestethics more of the cube case.

Well, I was originally looking for which style had better cooling capabilities.

Yikes and I thought I went overkill with this: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811146097&_ga=1.256441291.1135663618.1427450969

Personally I think both your options look terribly ugly.

Looks don't bother me. It could be poop brown for all I care, haha. My computer sits under my desk, and is rarely seen by anyone. The server, however, might be seen by more people.

The cube case is hideous, and the tower is several hundred dollars more expensive than I have ever, would ever, pay for a case. I would rethink some of your life choices if you're really considering either of these cases.

I have the Corsair Air 540 in black. I have Corsair H100i for CPU cooling installed at the top. It's been great and I really like it over the Antec Nine Hundred it replaced. Just after I bought my 540, I built a new PC for a family member and I went with the newly released Carbide Air 240. Personally, I would have gone with the smaller case since it can still fit 2 GPUs and the HDDs go in the back which is nice.

$180 for a keyboard??  Your out of your freaking mind!!  While it looks cool and all.. Come on rgb color lit keys -- really??

I just replaced my keyboard.. I got this one, with mouse ;)

http://www.logitech.com/en-us/product/wireless-combo-mk520

For $35 and while there I picked up a MS 800 with mouse as well for $20 to replace the crappy one I had at work.

Both are working fine - its a keyboard and mouse for gosh sake..  We clearly have different priorities on where to spend our IT budget money..   As to issues with 6TB -- which brand is having issues?  My point about the size of the disk is always going up while price per GB is always falling..  Buying space today that you will not use until tmrw is not good planning for budget - why pay for GBs to sit there not being used.. While you need to allow for growth.  Should be realistic in expectations..  I would not buy a 6 or 8TB myself doesn't work out to best GB/$ ratio - but those drives coming out just make the ones I would be looking at 2 or 3TB even better price point ;)  But by time I need 6TB in a single disk, pretty sure 12s will be out and 6TB will be common and cheaper, etc.

Nothing wrong with a $180 keyboard. It's their money, they can spend it at their will! Of course everyone has unique priorities/needs, you of all people should know this! :p

My whole philosophy is your input mechanisms to the computer should be of fine quality. This includes peripherals - mouse, keyboard, monitor, speakers, webcam, etc. Think about how many hours you spend on your computer, these peripherals are the ones you touch, see and hear. A good mechanical keyboard is a must for me (love the feedback) - I'm spending hours typing or the occasional gaming. Use one before you bash mech. users with your $35 keyboard/mouse combo (which I've used, and loathe using)

Corsair Carbide in black (cube). I have the Obsidian 250D which I thought was a nicer package / compromise.

I type every single day from from pretty much the time I get up to when I go to bed ;)  I don't have any issues with pretty much any keyboard..  As you can see from the amount I post here just on neowin I do quite a bit of typing and ramble on quite often.  But when you type 70+ words a minute without even trying -- it doesn't take long to have a very long post, etc.

I am with you - its his money, and more power to him or anyone that wants to buy such a device.. Just would never be something I would even think of spending that kind of money on.  I have been typing since the 7th grade (what 1977 or so) When there was only a few males in the class ;) with old manual typewriters and electric, etc.. So I have used keyboards back when they were only mechanical ;) I don't have a problem with any keyboard.

My priorities would never go to something that..  Your talking a faster cpu, more memory, more hdd space when your talking that kind of money..

I will have to look to see if that keyboard is somewhere where I can test it.. But unless gets me a beer when I get thirsty and fan pops out and does a nice breeze if gets hot I can not see spending that kind of money on keyboard no matter how many colors I can make the keys light up with ;)

I spent $130 on a DAS mechanical keyboard. Best keyboard i've ever owned!

8 - 10 years ago I bought a cubed case. I would never do that again. It was such a cramped pain in the ass to work with.

I was thinking, Just for you I should totally paint my 12 Port USB hub gold.

I own that exact cube case...it's a beautiful case with TONS of room for anything you would want to do.  I love the fact that it hides the power supply as well.  I also have the $180 keyboard lol I love it too...best keyboard I have ever owned =)

Corsair cube case FTW!!!  You will love it!

Heh, yes you may be rambling, but your posts are informative and detailed! :)

I also love fast CPU's, more memory, SSD's, etc. You could spend hundreds/thousands easily on computers - they can be an expensive hobby!  I'm personally not a fan of RGB lit keyboards, but I do love backlit keyboards (one color) - I'll take red, green or white. If you're an area like me where we only have BestBuy, good luck getting your hands on one of those keyboards. I wish we had Fry's, or Microcenter or another big chain like that here. Hobby stores are also another nice place to try stuff out.

We do have Frys right across the street from work actually.. Have to see if they have one and take a lunch break over there.

Agreed computers/tech can be expensive hobby/passion.  I for example spent 250$ on a nest thermostat, which to some might seem crazy..  But it love the ability to check my usage, change it from my phone no matter where I am.  Monthly reports on usage, how I compare to others in my same area for time running, temp set, etc.

I also have harmony hub so my remote tv/dvr/popcorn/sound system is all wifi. Can use the remote or my phone or tablet, etc.  That wasn't cheap either I think $130 or so..  But if I had to pick a toy like that over keyboard - I would pick one of those any day of the week, etc.  I spent $300 on a wifi AP, and then $100 for a 3x3 pci card to be able to play with AC.  And I don't eve use wifi in my machine - its wired gig and it already had wifi anyway.  I just don't use it since its not a mobile device and even with 3x3 AC your not close to gig wire speeds.  Also picked up couple of usb dongles to play with ac as well for laptops.  That was easy a $500 project.. That some people would consider waste of money.. But to me this provides functionality and stability and ability to learn and play with tech that I was not able to do before, etc..

Keyboard to me is just something you pickup for $20 bucks when the old one gets to act up etc..  I too would love light keys, I looked for one that that was wireless and lighted keys but you don't see many of those because of drain on battery, etc.  And the wireless was more important to me than light up keys.  I do love my wifes light up keyboard on her laptop - well worth the $25 add on cost when ordering it, etc.

Clearly there is market for them, just not going to sell me on it that is for sure..  Now if won the lottery or something ;)

Now the Arx control seems quite cool... I could see that being useful - but that to be available on cheaper model than $180..

I would go with one of CaseLabs offerings since it looks like you're going to spend over $250. They have far superior mounting options for various bay devices, hard drives, and watercooling.

Oh my god! I'm in love with that case. I can re-work my Server to fit this. The only thing I dislike is the 3 maximum slot bays.

Do I have to use WaterCooling with that Carbide Air 240 case? I don't think an ESXi Server needs water cooling :p

The difference between us, BudMan, is I do a lot of gaming. I have a specific profile for every game that I play. I'm incredibly picky with my keyboards, hence using the same G15 Keyboard for 8 years. When I buy drives, I'll start with 1 4TB drive, and buy 2 more over the course of 3 - 6 months. I like the idea of a 6TB or 8TB drive, but from what I've read about the Seagate 6TB drives, is they are either DOA or die in 6 months or less. But I haven't seen anything else since that article.

I agree with this. Like I stated above, I'm very picky with my input devices. I've tried tons of keyboards, and I've only liked 3 different ones. My co-worker has the Orion at work, and let me use it. The keys are pretty stiff at first, but it's amazing. The ARX Controls is pretty nifty as well. I originally wanted the G19 with a Colored LCD Display, but Logitech doesn't offer them on their site anymore, and NewEgg is selling them for 250$ from China. I refuse to buy anything from China again, I've been scammed twice on NewEgg, and once on Amazon. NewEgg refunded me (10$ gift card for both issues), and Amazon gave me my money back + gave me free 2 day shipping on the next order on anything below 50$ (Unless its books).

So do I. If I'm not typing, I'm on my phone. If you lived near me, BudMan, I'd let you test it out. It's truly an amazing keyboard. $180 is a bit steep, I will admit, but compared to other "gaming" keyboards, it doesn't come close.

Check out Roccat products. They have mice for over 200$, mousepads for 50$, and other insanely expensive stuff.

My peripherals last me quite awhile. No one in my family, or my friends get to touch my computer. If they need to look something up, I do it for them. I used to not care, but this last Christmas my brother used my PC for shopping, and loaded my PC up with adware, and tons of other crap. Disabled my No-Script, my antivirus, and ended up having to nuke all my drives.

I don't really care about the colors, I like the feel of it, and the ARX Controls. This keyboard will last me for a few years, and my mouse another year or two.

But, this seems to have gotten a bit off topic, unfortunately. Someone linked an awesome cube case, I'll look into building a server around that. As for my desktops, I'll have to do a bit more searching. The cost of cases doesn't bother me. The case I have now, I spent 90$ on it, and it weighs 35lbs with nothing inside it. Steel cases SUCK, but it's been one of the sturdiest cases ever.

Water cooling definitely not required. It comes with two fans at the front.
