Trying to setup PPTP VPN router

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm trying to setup a PPTP VPN server on one of my routers at home. I tried making it work on my second router (Linksys E1200v2) which runs on DD-WRT, but even after many hours of Googling, I couldn't get it to work. I also tried making it work on an older router (Cisco WRT120N), but had no luck either. -- the main objective is to make the Roku 3 streaming machines run on a VPN network. Ideally, I'd like it to work on the third router, essentially making the Roku users (not very "computer literate"( the ability to switch between Router 2 (Netflix Canada) and Router 3 (Netflix U.S.) -- if this couldn't work, then Router 2 would be better than nothing.

I tried following tutorials everywhere; making the router run in DMZ, shutting down the hardware firewall, etc., to no avail. I tried contacting PureVPN support, but they didn't really seem to know what's up, besides unchecking/checking things and then praying that it would work.
Here's a graphic of my network (the USB ethernet dongle can easily change device - I use for security reasons, i.e. no wireless admin access): https://i.imgur.com/xaiO1iY.png

I do know it's a lot of cable salad.

The asus would have to be your vpn point...are you having the devices host vpn or be a client to connect out.  Connecting out isn't the issue...hosting the vpn is.

If you are connecting out, who is the vpn provider (a friend, a service).   If a friend they will need to have it at their device directly behind the router for ease of setup.

The other issue is that the modem may also doing nat....as it may not be a modem but a gateway.  Many devices from the cable company are coming as gateways, which means that they also do nat which is another layer of stuff that will mess things up to be able to host your vpn setup.

Why would anyone be setting up PPTP??  You do understand its not secure and has been deprecated for years!!!

So you have 3 routers, that are routing and you want to vpn between them??  Why  Do you need vpn - are these users remote?  Or local?

You want your local users to be able to hit device 1 and see netflix ca, and device 2 and hit netflix us?  This is simple dns, you could intercept dns traffic from 1 and send it to wherever and from 2 and send it wherever.  But sure if you want to do it with vpn that could be done too.  I would have simple cheap vps in each location and then create site to site from my router.  Then policy route between the 2 for each device.

This is very simple to do with 1 router and pfsense or any linux distro..  As to doing it on dd-wrt, don't think so to be honest.  If you want to do stuff like site to site vpn and policy based routing and or interception of dns traffic and forwarding, etc.. Your going to want better tools then multiple soho routers and while quite powerful dd-wrt, its still very limited to other distros, m0n0wall, pfsense, ipcop, untangle, sophos utm, etc. etc.
