Skinning Windows 8

Recommended Posts

I have Windows 8.1 installed and am looking for the best way to try different skins. Both of the UX programs I used didn't work. they only changed the colors and didn't change to the advertised graphics. Is WindowBlinds the only option?

What do you mean, "both" (e.g. which ones did you try so far)?

For UXStyle, sometimes I find that I need to stop and restart the service before applying a new theme.

I tried UXStyle and then there's another one called UltraUXThemePatcher which is supposed to work better on Windows 8.1. Neither one works. I installed each and rebooted and tried styles that I downloaded and they just changed the colors, not the graphics. I am trying WindowBlinds right now and it works pretty good. I just like the idea of UX themes for performance reasons.

You're not going to get better "performance" from a theme, is anything it can cause slowdowns if not coded correctly

I use UxStyle run as Administrator to make sure it works properly.  Always seems to work fine for me.  I use a skin that makes it so that dark colored windows actually show white text.

Hope this helps you out.

Themes aren't really something you code, I highly doubt a visual style will slow your computer down. Themes are made by modifying the original Aero style's visual style.

If you can't get UXStyle to work, try this: http://www.syssel.net/hoefs/software_uxtheme.php?lang=en

You can find windows 8.1 themes here, but make the theme you want clearly states it is windows 8.1 compatible. Windows 8 themes will not work properly on Windows 8.1.
