Want to boot to Metro UI instead of Desktop Windows 8.1

Recommended Posts

Hi

I was using Classic Shell 4.1.0 on Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit. I love the start menu from the shell orb on the Desktop. I really got to like the Metro UI, and

decided I want to boot directly to the Metro Ui. After trying all settings in Classic Shell, and Windows 8.1 settings with no results, I completely uninstalled

Classic Shell. After some research, I found that in Windows 8.1, the default startup goes to Desktop. Is there a registry tweak to change the default boot

to go directly to Metro UI?

Thanks for your trouble, and have a nice day!

Regards,

bill48nj1.

Yea, right click the taskbar and check the properties. Under "Navigation" uncheck the one that says "Go to the desktop instead of Start when I sign in."

Right-click the taskbar, select Properties, click the Navigation tab, and enable the "When I sign in or close all apps on a screen, go to the desktop instead of Start" option.

Thanks for the reply, but I already had that unchecked under Navigation. I read that 8.1 is set to boot to desktop by default and no option to change it. In version 8

the defailt boot was to Metro Start screen. I was hoping someone had a registry hack to change 8.1 default boot back to metro.

Thanks,

The above posters are correct. Boot to desktop and the related checkbox to turn that off, were only introduced in 8.1

Hi.

I left "When I sign in or close all apps on a screen, go to the desktop instead of Start" unchecked.

You must have misunderstood my original post. I don't want to go to the Desktop, I want to boot 8.1 directly to METRO START SCREEN instead.

Thanks for your trouble.

Right, it is set to go to the desktop by default, but unchecking that box (which I forgot changed its text with the later update) will have it go to the start screen instead as soon as the user logs on, positive about that as I have a few 8.1 systems at home doing that now. I'm not in front of it now to check, but it should be setting the registry key below:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StartPage\OpenAtLogon
Setting that to 1 has it go to the start screen, 0 is the desktop. That's assuming some third party extension isn't overriding that of course, in which case you need to deal with that.

try to check it,apply,ok, reboot. then uncheck it,apply,ok and reboot, see if this works.

That's exactly what it should do. Maybe Classic She'll screwed with something.

I'm terribly sorry. I didn't misunderstand your original post, but I did apparently get the options confused. If you disable the option I previously mentioned then the OS should boot to the Start screen instead.
