uTorrent hopes to regain trust after BitCoin mining controversy

Recommended Posts

BitTorrent Inc. released a new version the popular BitTorrent client uTorrent this week. The release aims to make it easier for users to avoid a highly criticized Bitcoin miner which was bundled with the previous 3.4.2 version. The company understands that the controversy "eroded" the trust of some users, but hopes to keep them on board.

Last month many uTorrent users were surprised to see that their favorite BitTorrent client came bundled with the

Haven't used torrent software in years but I know I wouldn't go back. Companies can't just play around with users loyalty. People should really look at alternatives.

However only trust uTorrent version 2.2.1   (having upgraded from 1.8.2 only last month, LOL)

any version higher then that never had any trust from me in the first place ;)

I wonder how much they made out of this or how many people are still running the bitcoin miner?

probably a fair bit.   however nowadays it is hard to mine.

my friends bought overpowered computer for 3000 UK pounds 2 years ago,

and made back the 3000 pound they paid for it in 2 month.  after that all they mined was for free.

i can only imagine how much the early mining botnets made. :pinch:

Yea... no. I grudgingly dealt with the ads since they could be disabled but that bundled crapware was miles over the line. Denied it at first and then apologized later.. yea it'll happen again. Ditched uTorrent and haven't looked back, sorry but there's plenty of other good clients out there nowadays.

I was actually beta testing the very early versions, Like there were 50 people in the world that knew what it was back then. I thought this would be a waste of my time haha! How gutted am I, although eToro have just literally offered BitCoin on the markets. Haha.

Sigh....

I did too,  I had the software to mine bitcoins on my PC early after the creation,

and had quite a few coins, then dismissed it, as i was doing well on Nasdaq, and I saw bitcoin as childs play.

the hard drive i had the coins on was since then broken and thrown out, and when i saw bitcoin price hit over $500 i was biting my elbows!

according to my approximation i have done last summer, if the harddrive was alive and i could recover original bit coins, i would have had more then $100k in my account.

(i also refused to buy google for $90 per share on the IPO and i only needed $50000 investment to get that price - i would have being RICH

it is around $500 now, but i assume they had a few splits, didn't they?)

No idea - I kicked uTorrent to the curb for other reasons (specifically, issues in terms of bugs) prior to the Bitcoin miner discovery - instead, I use Tribler.

Anyone using uTorrent is a retard nowadays unless you use an older version. It's a lot like Kazaa or Limewire. Those applications just went completely downhill. When BitTorrent bought uTorrent, it was alright for a few years, but then out of nowhere they decided just to completely ###### on the application. It began trying to get you to install toolbars and stuff during installation, then it became more and more ads, then it became get pro. Just complete ###### nowadays.

Thank god uTorrent never took off with Android or other mobile operating systems and that other torrent applications came to save the day. I never torrent on my computers anymore, just use tTorrent Pro which I don't care to pay for, because it was a quality app. That and BubbleUPnP are my go-to solution these days.

I stopped using uTorrent years ago when I saw the bloat being added slowly.  Dont miss it, Deluge servesmy needs even more.

Yea, that is what got me.  The bloat and ads that were displayed.  Been using Deluge for a while now.

does it have autoshutdown and autoquit after download/upload?

Yes. Tixati has almost every good feature of uT and then some.

http://www.tixati.com/screenshots.html

K was checking out the screenshots, guess I'll have to download to look for the options I mention above.

edit: what does "tixati" stand for

The screenshots do not do justice to this program. Their website looks literally ###### too considering how someone can get a better website than that in 1 hour.

It has a full schedule manager.

The specific auto shutdown/startup options you mentioned are in right click menu of tray icon though.

I would love that to be the truth, as I use Tixati too, but unfortunately Tixati has several serious performance issues revolving around adding torrents.

and its banned on many private trackers because of its built in feature to spoof client id which rules it out for me :/

In simple terms, tixati has options that certain idiots do not like. They "ban" the client since it has those options forgetting that the people who actually want to use those said options do not use tixati. Those people will just use "hacked" uTorrent that can not be differentiated from the real deal. In other words, some private tracker mods are idiots.
