The Jimquisition: Five Golden Rules For Steam Early Access Games

Recommended Posts

I should point out it is possible to link to a YouTube video without it being embedded, just so you don't have to link to Jim's channel every time. :p

If you use the Link BBCode and paste the URL in there, it stays as a link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tygMqQNNWUo

Alternatively, you can type it out, instead...

Apologies if you already knew.

Aren't we allowed to embed NSFW videos, anyway, provided there's nothing NSFW in the thumbnail and we add a warning? (And that it's not porn, obviously.)

lol. I link to videos all the time and I never bother to check if they have NSFW content in them. I have never been warned.

For me, the rule of thumb is that if you leave a SFW site then you are risking being exposed to something NSFW.

I agree with his no. 4 strongly. The idea that you can;t judge early access is nonsense. It's nonsensical to argue you can't offer any judgement of something that has been released, arguably, to be evaluated and judged.

The early access reviews should be separated from normal reviews though.

Early access is just another word for paid beta. It's stupid to pay to be part of a beta but on another hand it would be stupid to include beta reviews with the real reviews once the game is released.

This said i'm pretty sure i've seen reviews on Steam flagged as early access reviews.

I agree the views of something in early access would only be relevant to the game in that current state. If an alpha/beta build was released then it would deserve a a new review.

I think Sterling is correct when he argues that just because something is in its early stages it doesn't mean it should be immune from criticism.

I could give you the first chapter of my novel and ask you what you thought. You might think it is rubbish, and that is the risk I take by asking you to judge my work so early in its life cycle.
