SSHD vs combi SSD/HDD; what to pick?

Recommended Posts

I have an older notebook (Asus K72Jr; Core i5, 8 GB RAM) and I am thinking of upgrading the standard HDD.

Since there are more or less two options: (Seagate's) SSHD or the WD Black 2 (separate SSD and HDD in one drive).

The price difference is quite huge, so I am wondering with average use of my girlfriend (not so a techy as I am, and not as speed-minded) using Internet, MS Office and a game of Red Alert 2 - for me- or so, will the SSDH suffice? Or is the Black 2 adviseable?

Currently Windows 7 is installed (and this will also be the case on the new drive), but I will upgrade it to Windows 10 when it becomes available.

Just wondered why you haven`t considered going for a full on SSD as you can get a 250GB one for a decent price nowadays. Fair enough if you need the space and don`t want to use an external or make space by using the cloud.

Looking at the 2 devices for the prices and utilization i would say the the Seagate SSHD looks to be the winner. There also seems to be some poorish reviews for the SSD part of the Black 2.

I suppose it boils down to, do you want to spend the extra money (nearly double) for something that maybe isn`t going to be used that much or doesn`t really need the extra potential speed.

They both come with data migration software by the looks of it...

Good luck with whichever you choose...

If its just for your gf for basic use the SSHD would be fine, but as mentioned you can get a small 120GB SSD for about the same as the SSHD and a 250GB for less than the dual drive, so unless she needs lots of space these might be better options.
