Just tried Google 'Find my phone' epic fail :)

Recommended Posts

I found out this morning that Google has a new 'Find my phone' feature, so I gave it a try. If you haven't heard about it you simple Google 'Find my phone', and a special interface pops up in Google which should show approximately where your device is, and allow you to turn the ringer on. Very handy...

So on my laptop I Googled 'Find my phone', and got a prompt that for 'Security purposes' I had to log into my Google account again. OK, no problem, entered my password and then I get prompted to enter my two-factor authentication code. Which I need to get from the Google Authenticator app. Which is on my phone. D'oh!

Luckily I was just testing the system. I tried again from my main PC and I wasn't prompted to relog so it worked. I mainly use my laptop for watching videos so I guess I hadn't logged into my account to refresh the cookie or something. But it does demonstrate a small weakness in the system. But I'll give it a pass considering it's only been available for a day or two.

Using my computer to access the Android Device Manager, has no such issues with me as I've set it up to allow access to my account from my computer, without prompting for a code from my authenticator, even though I have 2 factor security enabled. A little configuration in preparation makes it much simpler than you've experienced

That's just it though, I'm pretty sure that I had set it to not prompt from my laptop. For some reason even though I set it to not prompt it seems to very occasionally forget that and prompt me again. It's odd, but not something I'm losing sleep over. But it does raise the issue of what if you don't have access to an allowed computer? What if I'm on holiday, visiting relatives on the other side of the country, etc? In my case I also have the ability to use Samsungs phone tracking ability, so still not the end of the world for me.

Anyway, I'm not complaining, just relating what I thought was a funny tech security failure.

I can't even get this to work.  I type find my phone into google and it just pops up normal results.

You are not logged into the same google account on your PC (or not at all) that your phone is setup with...

That's the kind of scenario where one time emergency codes come handy.

It looks like the find my phone feature is not available everywhere yet. It doesn't work here at least, for any phone or account I have.

Won't work if you aren't logged into google or have location disabled on your device, not sure why anyone would do that, but some do

Always have a few on my PC and saved in the cloud
