anyone know words that are spelt the same, but said/pronounced differently mean something else?

 

like

 

resume - begin/carry on 
resume - CV 

bow - front of a boat 
bow - tied with ribbon 
bow - shoots arrows

 

sow - to plant seeds 

sow - a female pig

Some are pronounced the same.. but same deal.

live - like you live somewhere
live - something that is living (that is a live animal)

feet - what you have on the end of your legs (unless an amputee)
feet - a unit of measure 

seal - an animal
seal - used to close envelopes

Tear - a droplet of solution from the eye

Tear - to rip something (off)

 

Cow - a Bovine

Cow - an insult to a woman

 

Bank - a place to keep money safe

Bank - of a river

 

Sink - opposite of float

Sink - (ie) a washbasin

 

Keel - of a ship

Keel - (over <as in death>)

 

Lead - a metal

Lead - as in a leader of people

 

Match - as in identical

Match - a sports game

Match - singular to matches, for lighting fires etc..

Cue - on stage cue as in 'your cue to start'

Cue - used in snooker/pool

 

Tie - worn round the neck

Tie - to tie a knot

Tie - when a score is a draw/equal

Tie - a link to a person or object (eg, i have a tie with neowin)

Well thats actually the origin of the word as it was used as a code in all signals when they were being brought up tp the front line for the first time so that the Germans did not gain any intel if they were intercepted.To counter the machines the Germans high command ended up issuing a clip of armour piercing rounds to every soldier.As the round pierced the thin steel shell it just ricocheted round till it hit something, usually one of the crew working in an extremely noisy,hot,cramped and slow moving vehicle.

throw -> To toss something

throw -> A type of blanket

bass -> A type of fish

bass -> A deep loud tone sound

 

Bass - A stringed instrument that produces low frequency sound

 

Pot - slang for marijuana (weed)

Those two aren't pronounced the same though ?more like "liv" and "laiv"

invalid - not valid

invalid - a person made weak through illness or injury

 

Now for some sad insights into the minds of people in the old days and how they viewed handicapped people. It's the same word, now think of why it was used for handicapped, and probably why it's not as widely used anymore. like many other words in similar situations.
