Lollipop messed Up!

Recommended Posts

Hi,

 I just upgraded to lollipop (5.0.2). I am facing the following problems

  1. Large screen icons as compared to previous smooth icons. It looks vulgar!
  2. The digital clock on the wallpaper screen is not in the middle. It either goes to left or right. Also, the hour of the clock is in bolds. I have no idea why.
  3. Applications like skype, chess free, etc. are not visible in the applications' menu. Although it shows that it is installed in the settings -> app
  4. Touching the power button, I have to first swipe an icon and then the pattern. Earlier the patter came after the power button and not any icon in between. I have to perform an extra step now.

Following are the details

  • Phone - Sony Xperia Ultra T2
  • Present Android - 5.0.2
  • Earlier Android - 4.4.3

Earlier screen -> http://developer-static.se-mc.com/wp-content/blogs.dir/1/files/2014/01/xperiat2ultra_black_660x384.jpg

Present screen -> http://i57.tinypic.com/aavpzb.png

Please help. I do not want to downgrade, but fix these problems only.

That's Sony for you, I'll second PillowThief, use an alt launcher, the Sony launcher seems to be crap

Alternative;y you can do a factory reset to see if it clears the bugs, it is recommended you do a rest after a major update like this one

The big icons came with the Android 4.4. 4 update, it's the new look on Sony phones and not an error (unfortunately).

I had so many problems with my updates but they were fixed by doing a factory restore (note, this erases everything so backup all personal data before).

Conclusion we all came to a long time ago is that Sony do uwful updates.

1. Using Nova Launcher will allow you to have smaller icons, large icons have been the norm in Android since 4.4, it's not something most stock launchers let you change. I don't like the large icons either, however once you start using a 3rd party launcher you will probably never want to use the stock Sony launcher again anyway!

2. The Digital Clock you have is actually Chronus, if you delete the widget and add it to your home screen again you should be given some options to customise it:

After you are happy with how it looks you can then hold your finger over to to re size the widget and you'll be able to center it. (If you cant re-size it with the Sony launcher, again this is something Nova Launcher will fix).

If you don't have the above options when adding the clock widget to your home screen again simply download Chronus from the Google Play store, you will have a lot of options to customize how the clock widget looks.

3. Not sure about this as i don't have a Sony phone, however using a different launcher, such as Nova Launcher will show everything by default and should fix that.

4. That's normal in Android 5, I don't think you can alter that. I must admit the extra swipe to unlock the phone seems a bit pointless (especially if you have disabled notifications on the lock screen). Google are essentially forcing you to use notifications on the lock screen. A trade off for this is if you have a notification on the lock screen is that if you double tap on it you will then be asked to unlock the phone and you will be taken directly to the app with the notification, instead of then having to swipe down to see the notification and click on the notification to load the app.

Thanx a lot for that guys

@InsaneNutter - Thanx a lot for the detailed view.

For the time being, I backed u my data, 'clean repaired' lollipop (funny name though) and restored data. Half of the problem is gone. Only the big icons and that funny extra swipe remain. I have never used Nova launcher, so lets see, how things work out. One more question - Will Nova launcher be using any extra RAM?

It shouldn't do, you will not be using the Sony launcher so any ram you save from that will be used with Nova Launcher instead. I cant imagine you will notice much difference ram wise.

Nova Launcher worked perfectly fine on my old Galaxy Nexus with 1gb of ram.

Will Nova launcher be using any extra RAM?

I'd say that also depends on the configuration you use with Nova launcher.

But overall, it shouldn't use that much RAM. When searching for 'nova launcher ram usage' most people report a little footprint when it comes to RAM usage.
