Windows 10 for Phone good direction?

Recommended Posts

I really like my Windows Phone 8.1, beside IE and Music app. Everything about it runs great more so then Android and iOS. After playing around with Windows 10 for phone. I find a lot of space is being use up like the People app and Project Spartan. The new icons are not as nice. The system lags which I understand its technical preview but should not be this bad. I'm testing it with 635.

Feel like Microsoft is putting more work into Windows 10 desktop then the phone.

Have to agree the UI is nowhere near as slick, a contacts page is the perfect example of that. Yes IE in WP has always been a little amateurish and quite frankly the music app they brought in for 8.1 should never have happened. They still have time to make the new version better but given I don't think much of the desktop OS I'm not sure I'll even stay with Windows Phone, I'm not planning on updating anything from 8.1 currently.

Wait 3 weeks and the lag will be gone, I almost guarantee it.  It's still pretty beta so of course you're gonna run into laggy apps and stuff like that.

If you can't handle a preview don't install it on your phone.

I find 10 to be far better than 8.1 on my phone, I can put up with some lag and battery life issues for all the other UX benefits.

Besides the Contacts/People app, almost none of the native apps support any sort of gestures, because a) these do not have pivot 'page' layout anymore and b) not even the Hamburger menu can be invoked by a left-to-right swipe from the left side. There are some gestures that you can use in the Music app, but other than that, all hail the staticly-launched precisely-needs-to-be-pressed Hamburger button&menu :/?

The thing that really bothers me is the lack of a linked inbox. If this is the route they are going to take I might have to reconsider buying a W10 flagship in the fall. Even in Windows 10 PC version the mail app requires two clicks to change account view when there is the left sidebar that can easily accommodate at least a few different accounts.

Edit: To answer the OP regarding Win 10 Mobile development, Microsoft has said that the bulk of the PC team will move over to mobile after it RTMs this month. You are right that it needs a lot of work!

Lots of people were complaining about the desktop version much the same way, but now we see that it's all coming together.  Mobile isn't going to be close to RTM till end of Sept or October, if not even November.  They're only just now going to start working on it fully, we haven't seen them put much into the user level other than a few changes to apps and settings.   I expect to see large changes in quality come August.

U can create a tile on the start screen for each of your mailboxes but yes, that would be helpful.

Seems I'm not the only one, upvote it :p

I think the people upvoting it would only be a small percentage overall of those who use linked inbox

Windows 10 Mobile will end up being a good release. Especially the latest builds are really heading in the right direction.

Which particular features?

The look and feel, performance, animations... They have a long road ahead still, but they're steadily progressing. At least that's my impression :)

Link inbox is probably coming, but who knows when, with the OS done and work shifting to mobile after, I don't know if the apps will see a steady stream of updates till mobile RTMs as well, but we'll see.

August will be a telling month, not so much about rate of Windows 10 upgrades but if we get core app updates pushed out.

However outlook isn't part of the OS but an app already available to Android and iOS (not sure if it is still in beta though), it's quite alarming this feature isn't seen

Can someone be so kind to explain the difference between the windows 8 and the 10 . Ive not seen any clear cut variations in the user interface on both my computers. email, wifi, vpn connectivity are still the same. They just changed the UI.
