[OT] Wolfenstein: The Old Blood

Recommended Posts

Introduction:
Tomorrow Tuesday, May 5th 2015, Wolfenstein: The Old Blood comes out.

This thread is meant to serve as a reminder it is releasing and of course as a place to discuss all things about the game.

It is not the most interesting or thorough OT, but it will have to do.

I personally loved The New Order. It was not only one of my favorite First Person Shooters to come out recently, it is in my Top 5 Games of 2014.

People seemed to like the latest Wolfenstein entry, a game I have yet to play. Is this essentially standalone DLC? I might wait until a complete edition before I buy.

Yep this is standalone, but I do think playing the first game would help with one's enjoyment of the game, but at the end of the day it is just a damn good shooter, so story is not hugely important and takes a back seat to killing.

I also have a certain place in my heart for the series. Return To Castle Wolfenstein is directly responsible for getting me interesting in gaming again on a computer.

When I was really young I had a Commodore 64, so I of course played all the great games it could play. I then did not get another computer until after I graduated college, and since I went to Art School and was primarily getting a computer to learn skills that would get me a job, I went with a Mac. I pretty much missed a whole century of PC gaming except for the fact that I got to play here and there at a friends house whose father was a programmer for IBM. The first game I purchased for my Mac was Return To Castle Wolfenstein. I played the hell out of it. About a year later is when I built my first dedicated Windows based Gaming PC and I joined this website called Neowin for the questions I had since it was my first time building a PC, and it was all because of how much I enjoyed RTCW and Max Payne. The rest is history.

What I really love about this newer series is it sticks to what makes an FPS fun. It has a weapon wheel. It is mainly all about shooting lots and lots of stuff. Some people hated that it did not follow the modern FPS philosophy, I loved it and actually thought it gave the genre a breath of fresh air ironically.

Playing it now. Great game

Could not agree more. It is so damn good.

I am easily going to get 10 hours out of it, if not more. I just got to Chapter 4 and I am currently at 4 hours and 36 minutes. I am searching everywhere though, and also focusing on the perks. I already have both armor perks, and have about 60% of the rest. I am purposely trying new things and dying as anything you did previous to dying applies to the perks system.

Just a great, great game. Seriously the best $20 I have spent perhaps ever in gaming.

I share the exact same feelings/experience as you, but i'm just further behind in the game. Loved The New Order, finished it twice and then some. This time around I'm trying to find and explore as much as I can.

It's got a wonderful balance of extra perks to find, plot progression and just no-fuss FPS.

It also helps that nazis are just inherently great bad guys...

may i ask, what difficulty you are playing it.   back in the day i always played on hard, but i am getting smoked.   normal is the highest difficulty i fell comfortable at playing.

a bit of a shame, but last time i really enjoyed FPS action was the original Painkiller.  that was pure FPS condensed! that was 2004.

Absolutely. I am playing it on the middle one, which I am assuming is Normal, "Bring Em On"

I always play on Normal these days myself. I have nothing to prove and barely any time to play, so for me it is more about having fun than saying I was able to get through something challenging. Being 40 years old might do that do you.

By any chance are you getting smoked at the part while you are on the boat? If so there is a very good reason why probably, and it took me like 20 minutes to figure it out myself.

nah, i was fine with this part.

just overall. i used to playing on hard, but now the medium is the best i wanna do.

you are right though, it is the age. i am 35 and i don't want to spend the time to became good.  medium difficulty is perfect.

sure, if i die a lot, i can probably finish the game on hard.  but i already die in medium... it is nice not to have to die more the once to learn the level.

i am playing on PC.  i assume it must be harder with controller? it is an FPS....

I have been playing on both PC and consoles for so long now I guess I am just used to it. So I would not say it is harder. Less precise absolutely, but I have never felt it is harder. In a way I think it might have even made me better on the PC because of playing with a controller on the consoles. I am way more precise on the PC then I used to be prior to playing on consoles. I try to be as precise as I can be with a controller, and I do get headshots as well, but I think that trying to be precise on the console, and it being more difficult, has made it easier to be precise on the PC, since it is not as difficult. Does that make any sense? The slowness of the controller yet still trying to be precise means when I am on the PC and have the speed and precision of the KB&M, it all comes together much quicker on the PC. Hope I explained that properly.

So in a very weird way I think playing with a controller has made me better on the PC when I do use a KB&M, or it can all simply just be in my imagination.

  • 3 weeks later...

Are they going to do an Enemy Territory mod yet? :p

I played an hour or two of The New Order and thought it was a very pretty, surprisingly good action game.. I only stopped because I was distracted by racing sims at the time and have never gone back to it.

Is it possible to apply cheats on this one? I remember playing the initial version of Castle Wolfenstein some years back and it enabled cheats very easily.
