Clean up all folder/file permissions/owners?

Recommended Posts

I've had the same Photos folder for 10+ years, and it has spanned across many systems and many versions of Windows.

I have added folders and files to it throughout it's lifespan.

Due to this, different folders have different permissions and it's becoming a mess.

One example of a way it's becoming a mess is that Picasa can't save edits to files in certain random folders. Access denied-type things.

E:\My Pictures\Photos\ is the current folder location.

How can I strip all files and folders of any permissions/owners and start afresh?

I want to be able to do anything with any folder/file and with any program. I want complete access.

I am running Windows 8.1 and I'm logged into my Microsoft account.

Any ideas?

Had hoped this had been answered, as Im looking for same fix...

Over the years, moving photos about from PCs, Servers, etc.. my acl's and permissions have all got messed up, and now certain apps im using to organise and rename them produce errors on certain files.  When I look athe security info, I can see inconsistencies between them, unknown users owning them.. etc..

I have taken ownership with my admin account, and given full permission, but still having issues.. Ive tried various combinations, but am a little reluctant to go too mad in case I lose access to them, as I have done already with one such folder!

What would be the default acl/permissions for new clean files, so I could then reformat the folder with the appropriate acls and permissions??

.. Nothing like self help!!

Just created a blank .jpg and had a look, so will backup all my pics, then apply the acl/permissions of this file to all others and see if that works...

May be able to upload them to a file host, such as MEGA, and then re-download later. Not sure if the permissions are kept through that kind of transfer.

why don't you just right click on parent folder, security, advanced, take ownership - set to your account.  Then after you have taken ownership down the tree.  Same thing but permissions this time and write the permissions you want down the tree.. There is no need for any 3rd party to do this..  Its a simple click click sort of thing using the default dialog in the system.

edit.. Arrggh this is from MAY... Why would someone post to such an old thread, clearly the OP has worked it out by now.  He never even came back to the thread for a bump..
