Windows 10 10074 and Steam games

Recommended Posts

When starting some Steam games the Start menu is triggered which causes the game to lose focus and the desktop, with the Start menu deployed, to be shown.  If you alt-tab back to the game or click on its icon it will minimize again and the Start menu will be shown again.

So far this has happened to me in Car Mechanic Simulator 2015, Just Cause 2 and Terraria.  For CMS2015 I used to be able to start the game (you'd see the game cursor and the system cursor) and then press the Windows key to make the Start menu go away.  Now the whole game is minimizing.

Anyone else run into this and/or know of a fix?

I've seen the start menu pop-up anytime the screen resolution changes. Kind of annoying actually....

It happens to me as well when running Just Cause.  I have a Logitech keyboard that has a small "joystick" switch that effectively disables task switching.  I'll try it out tonight to see if it fixes the problem.  It had not occured to me to use the switch until I saw your post.

Good call!  My gaming resolution is different than my desktop resolution.  I changed the game's resolution to match the desktop and the problem went away.

Now how to get it to stop doing that...

May be related. (Dunno, got it in a VM and not playing games on it.)

  • Project Spartan crashes when attempting to open it on some devices.
  • The Start menu appears when features of the work area, such as the screen resolution, DPI setting, or screen rotation, are changed. This can occur when running apps, such as games, that open in full-screen. These apps then crash when pressing the Alt+Tab keys.

it was listed as a known bug when 10074 was released that some full screen games did not work, hopefully that update fixes it.

I tried the Logitech switch and that did the trick.  The problem goes away when I use the Joystick switch.  I will try the update now.

It is precisely this issue (game resolution vs. desktop resolution) - and it is an issue in any OS where the two differ; it's not unique even to Windows.  I've had it happen in OS X, and Linux distributions as well.

It's why games that don't support 1920x1080 are a pain on my desktop-formfactor PC (this is especially true with vintage/legacy games that insist on running full-screen - the issue is NOT unique to Windows, let alone Windows 10, so it's not a criticism of Windows in general).  I've even thought up an acronym for it - RMI (Resolution Mismatch Issues).

I have a 4K desktop but I still run my games at 1920x1080 and everything leading up to the latest Win10 build has worked fine.  Apparently the issue with this latest build is that it would trigger the start menu to open, which would cause focus to shift to it and minimize the full screen game.  Now with the update the behavior is back to how it was.
