Portable amp for phone

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I find my current phone, lacks the power to drive my etymotic er4pt, not to mention conversion to ER4s...  I've google a bit and have a username over at head fi, but neowin has never let me down.

Currently looking at this:

Don't know very much about this area, but isn't FIIO the brand to look at in this space?

Yeah, I got burnt by head-direct products (china), so not really considering anything chinese, but if recommendations add up, I might go that way I guess.

I have been using a FiiO Mont Blanc with my Zune for years. Very portable and works very well.

Excuse my ignorance, can I connect this via usb in and ouput through 3.5mm as that would be my only requirement. edit: nevermind, brainfart, simple LOD cable should do the trick

I have this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Fiio-E5-FiiO-Headphone-Amplifier/dp/B001P9EQH8/ref=sr_1_18?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1431610695&sr=1-18&keywords=fiio

I got it back in the day for my Lumia 800 after the WP 7.8 update which decreased headphone volume to the point I couldn't even isolate the noise around work half the time. This worked great (has some little bass boost thingy too) and is relatively portable you can clip it on your belt or the side of your pocket. Comes with a really short male-male headphone cable that doesn't hang off your clothes or take up unnecessary space in your pocket where you might also keep your cell phone or portable MP3 player. That was a few years ago though so I'm sure there are probably smaller and better ones. This one I know worked great though. Made even ###### headphones sound a tad better than going straight to MP3 player jack.

Well, based on head fiers response.

Thinking about getting a DAP instead of a DAC/AMP.

My DAP history:

Creative zen vision:m  (Still works, though borked usb connector won't allow me to put new music into it)

iPhone 3Gs

Creative Zen Xfi2 (Stolen)

iPhone 4

Samsung Galaxy S4

IEM history:

Creative ep630, Head direct Re2, RE0, Etymotic MC5 and etymotic ER4PT (current)

I was looking for a dac/amp, but based on cel4145 recommendation, I am now thinking of changing my source (LG G3).  How much will my IEM benefit from changing source to a sansa, ibasso or fio dap?  Will it be worth it?

It doesn't have a usb in which I need.
