Vienna brings in gay pedestrian crossing lights

Dozens of traffic lights in the Austrian capital have been changed to show gay couples crossing the road instead of the traditional lone figure.

It is hoped the eye-catching change will improve road safety, a Vienna spokeswoman said

Vienna has changed the signal images at 120 pedestrian crossings - also showing heterosexual couples - in preparation for the Eurovision Song Contest.

Officials said the signals were a sign of Vienna's open-mindedness.

Toni Mahdalik of the right-wing Freedom Party of Austria called the initiative gender politics "gone mad".

He said the money would have been better spent on reducing poverty and improving unemployment figures.

It is hoped the signals, which show couples holding hands and with love hearts above them instead of a gender-neutral figure, will also improve safety.

The unusual symbols are attracting the attention of drivers and pedestrians, a spokeswoman for Vienna's city lighting department said.

Many of the millions who watch Eurovision include a huge gay fan base and last year's winner, bearded transvestite Conchita Wurst, became a global gay icon with the song Rise like a Phoenix.

About 40 countries are taking part in the 2015 Eurovision contest. The final will be held on May 23.

Oh, because before it wasn't clear if homosexuals were allowed to cross.  It is a well known fact, german automobiles are magnetically attracted to homosexuals...thereby alluding to the fact that Daimler Benz, was, in fact, a homosexual.

It is a little known fact that homosexuals are at a greater risk of being hit by cars.  The rainbow colored attired are awe inducing and distract the drivers.

These lights are connected to the latest quantum computer that can detect the future attention of the driver through various next gen algorithms.

If the coast is clear - the homosexuals can happily frollick across the street in all their splendor.

What is the point of this?

It's for the Eurovision Song Contest. It's just a way of promoting how open and friendly the city is whilst having a bit of fun with it.

Depend whether the spending are worth it or not,

but this spending for the sake changing are simply silly and wasteful,

theres no report crossing lights were broken before the change.

This is ridiculous. What was so "wrong" with the original. What next...

All of you suffer from a worse lack of humour than a stereotypical German would.

i would prefer total equality in front of the law. but that's asking too much out of this country, instead they are going for "different" lights. for sure, i think, some people in their offices now feel better. :/

@Frank B.

Pardon me, didn't know the signs were suppose to be humorous. Additionally, I don't see how these new signs will improve safety versus the gender-neutral version as the article states.

Humour are fine, but using other's money to fund your 'humour' are irresponsible.
