Morisato
1TB Seagate HDD where I moved all files and folders to another HDD since this one was reporting a 27% health status with 120 bad sectors but SMART reports it as a PASS (Green) and there are no strange HDD noises. Is the HDD still good you think? I ran error reporting chkdsk and recover bad sectors (via error-reporting in windows) and it reported all good. The other issue I have is that once I moved all the files and folders to another drive this drive is literally empty. When I looked at the drive space it only reported 930GB free of 931GB. Went into properties and noticed that it's using 748 MB. Checked to see if there were any hidden files but there were none besides $Recycling.Bin and System Volume Info which all report less than 20.0 KB total. No paging file either so I don't know what's taking that much space. Any suggestions?
Mindovermaster Moderator Posted May 14, 2015 Moderator Share Posted May 14, 2015 There is likely a hidden partition, as to why it is showing this. Windows cannot see it. Only way you'll see it is in gparted. A Linux Partition program. I have a 1.5TB WD Black, it has "1.5 TB
xendrome
Get a program that shows disk usage, you probably have hidden files on the drive like System Restore, etc.

StrikedOut
Take a look at DISKPART, https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/300415. See if it can shed any light on the usage.
Mindovermaster Moderator Posted May 14, 2015 Moderator Share Posted May 14, 2015 Yes I do know the difference. I will see if I can get gparted working. You can see hidden partitions via Disk Management I believe under windows. False. It will not show it in Disk Management. You need to run Gparted off a bootable media (CD/DVD/USB Flash)
deni88
by default, what uses the used space in an empty formatted HDD?
darkrats
Even a brand new drive will show a significant amount of space already being used. This is reserved for boot data, file allocation tables and all kinds of things, depending on the Operating Systems the drive is designed for. There's no way to get a hard drive to have empty space match the total size of the drive. Anibal P 1 Share
