What VPN are you using?

Recommended Posts

I'm curious which VPNs other neowin users are using and why?

I've been specifically looking at vpns that are affordable, decent speeds, no logs.

The VPNs I've tested so far are:

  • Private Internet Access
  • Nordvpn
  • Airvpn
  • IPVanish
  • Boxpn

All of these providers have good user reviews, easy setup, and all have plans that cost less than $5/month on a one year plan.

The problem I'm having is speed. So far the best one has been Boxpn where I was getting 18-22 Mbps. Outside of a VPN I get around 33 Mbps.

Most of the servers i'm testing are giving me around ~10Mbps most of them ~5Mbps or lower. Several of the providers have servers in Vancouver or Seattle with a low latency but i still cant get the speed I want.

And what exactly are you doing with it?  Circumvention regional restrictions or actual privacy from the local wifi network your on when say at starbucks or hotel?

I get my full speed from any of the vpses I run and vpn connection to them.. They cost 6 to 15 a YEAR!!!

I'm using it to torrent ubuntu distros without my ISP seeing it or the ubuntu police knowing my IP address.

And that is pointless - take your money your spending on a vpn and get a seedbox if you really want to download linux distro's FAST!!..  Comes with a vpn connection like you would need it anyway since you can just sftp or https anything to and from the box, etc. etc.

Does your vpn support port forwarding the traffic to your client?  Its amazing how many people don't really understand how torrents work.. For a vpn to work for torrents the port your running so people can get pieces from you has to be forwarded from the end point of the vpn..  This is rarely the case... And would have to be setup for sure, you can just fire up a vpn and expect your p2p to scream through it...

While sure you would be able to grab from seeds and peers from the vpn - they would not be able to query you for pieces.. And will prob block you since your not sending them anything.  If your wanting to use a vpn for torrents then it has to support sending the traffic from the vpn end point down the tunnel to your client.  It is just so better to get a seedbox if that is what your wanting to do.

Don't mess about with VPN providers, get a cheap VPS and install OpenVPN Access Server. You are in control of your own VPN then, OpenVPN Access Server can all be configured from a nice web ui too and is extremely easy to have up and running in a couple of minutes.

I have a VPS Classic 1 from OVH which is

I use Torguard.  I feel like there's probably better out there, but I'm too lazy to shop around...  That, and well, then I'd have to cancel my Torguard Account...  It all seems a little too much work for a Dude like me.  :-p

What VPS are you using thats that cheap?

Wouldnt a VPN be more secure than a VPS are there are multiple people using the same IP address as well as no logs?

How is a VPS compared to using a VPN in terms of privacy / anonymity ?

If hypothetically someone was downloading episodes of Game of Thrones wouldnt a VPN be better?

A vps is your vpn, once you install openvpn as on it - which is 2 seconds..  like I said I have a few of them range from $6 a YEAR to 15$ a YEAR!!  that is 50 cents a month for the cheap ones.. They don't support ipv6 and have a bit less bandwidth per month than the $15 ones.. What logs can they keep of stuff your running on your own server?  And all traffic to and from it is encrypted?

But again for your use of p2p a seedbox is much better option!!

SSTP for the win, But for the fact that its propritry to Microsoft all other VPN's would be history. Its virtually impossible to block as it appears as regular https traffic so vpn access will work even on the most locked down networks.

No ipv6 as of yet.

Been happy with all 3 of them.. They all have multiple locations to chose from, etc..  If you are thinking about any of them, if you want I have referral links - but not really worried about it.  They are so cheap.. I have been with buyvm for few years.. The ipv6 is nice.. I running name servers for test domain supporting dnssec on them currently.  Also running smokeping off some of them.  Lots of stuff you can do with a low end vps - you don't always need 8GB of ram and TBs of storage ;)

So my speed issue with PIA was solved by changing my network adapter to half-duplex from full-duplex.

I know get my full connection speed on a couple of their servers and significantly improved speeds on the servers that were slow.

The PC software and the phone App they offer are pretty straight forward and have some nice features such as the VPN kill switch.

If the VPN drops it cuts your connection so that your torrent or p2p apps don't start calling out on your home IP.

I am on a one year package with them currently but I will look into a VPS as its a lot cheaper.

"So my speed issue with PIA was solved by changing my network adapter to half-duplex from full-duplex."

What??  So you had a duplex mismatch and other side was half and not full.. Were you not auto?  What is your nic connected into?  There should be NO reason on the planet to be running half duplex - unless your connected to a HUB from 20 years ago.

So is PIA forwarding ports to you?

Our software uses a virtual TAP-Win32 adapter to tunnel the encrypted traffic to our servers. Your Ethernet adapter likely uses full-duplex connections, but it also has a default half-duplex setting. Our virtual adapter only runs in half-duplex mode. It inherits the half-duplex speed from the real network adapter.

What?  Where is that from?  so you have to set your interface to half duplex?  What if you were on a gig local connection..  That is BS.. plain and simple..

That's from an email I sent to support after I noticed that my phone was getting 30 Mbps + on servers my wired pc was only getting 10 Mbps.

PIA does offer port forwarding, only one port and they give you the port so if you can't change the port in the software youre SOL.

Have been using PIA for a year now, tried several other ones but always came back to PIA. Reasonable speeds and solid connection.

So now your local network connection has to run half duplex.. so you can get crappy internet speeds through a vpn to hide downloading linux distros from your isp ;)

Yeah seedbox is so much easier!

What tap driver are they using - I run openvpn and have tap installed as interface, and can tell you I get full speeds and my lan connection is not in half duplex mode.

A VPS is nice but I use my VPN to get around region locks and I can't change my VPS IP for that.

I just stick with Private Internet Access as they are cheap and gives me around 50Mbps down which is just fine for me. Also use it on my iPhone when using public hotspots. For $40 a year I can't really complain.

Also something to remember with a VPS is that your VPS provider will keep logs whereas most VPN providers do not so if you are doing something that perhaps you shouldn't be doing then a VPS is pretty easy to track back to you. A VPS isn't the best idea if you need to protect your anonymity.
