Do you have Comcast usage?

Recommended Posts

It seem like I can't stay until the 300GB usage cap. Hulu Plus and Netflix is what I use the most and it seem like I'm always over by 10 to 20 GB a month. I really hate why they do this. Does anyone have this issue too with Comcast? The only other service I can get is AT&T and thats only 5MB down and 250GB cap which is not any good for watching tv. I don't have cable just internet and it seem like they calculate the usage if you are a Netflix and Hulu Plus use just over 300GB which I have always go over.

It seem like I only can use 20 days out of the 30 days of the month and I'm getting really tired of this. Is anyone having this issue too? Comcast start to put caps around 2008 when Netflix start to stream content.

I was not aware that they enforced it anywhere.

Same here, and we use A LOT of data with 5 people 5 computers, 5 phones, 3 tablets

No warnings and we've really pushed it a few times

OP so what exactly happens when you go over the limit?  You get limited in speed, your internet just goes off - what?

You do understand that netflix and hulu have different quality options so that you don't always have to be downloading at Multiple GB per show..

https://help.netflix.com/en/node/87

So standard setting it  0.7GB per hour - if you were watching 8 hours a of netflix a day for a month that would be 168GB, hair over half your 300GB limit.

Hulu I believe is only like 650MB an hour..  So dude your either watching a ###### load of shows/movies - or you have the settings up to the MAX, and watching a LOT of shows.. Are you streaming to a media player like your dvd or roku or appletv, etc..  Smart TV with apps?  Chromecast?

I would prob look to what exactly is using up the bandwidth so our sure..  And trim down your setting in netflix for example..

I'm using Hulu Plus and Netflix both in High Def. Why should I use standard setting when I'm getting HD quality. Makes no sense and I'm not going to change my quality to try to stay under. My dad watch Netflix too. I find this completely bullsh*t by Comcast. They can handle the traffic and I should not be harass by them for my usage.

There are a couple of cities that Comcast is testing datacaps at:

Huntsville and Mobile, Alabama; Tucson, Arizona; Atlanta, Augusta and Savannah, Georgia; Central Kentucky; Maine; Jackson, Mississippi; Knoxville, Nashville and Memphis, Tennessee; and Charleston, South Carolina.

OP doesn't live in those cities though so I'm not sure why he's getting those caps. Maybe Lawrenceville is considered a part of Atlanta .

And yet you still don't say what exactly happens when you go over.. Change ISPs if you don't like them..  You can always go with a cell provider, etc. etc..

Dude even at HD that is a ###### load of data.. As you see I am not a stranger to using up bandwidth, and I am no where close to your numbers.. I have netflix, I download a ###### ton of "linux distros" etc.. I have 3 phones in the house, tablets and laptops and run multiple VMs etc. etc..  I run a ntp server in the ntp pool.  As you see I was just uploading 90GB, etc..  And I don't come close to your numbers..

So clearly your doing something that it outside the norm..  They don't come up with a number that every user they have is going to go over, they come up with a limit that is for the exceptions not the norm...

The Sandvine report also examined consumption patterns among different cohorts of users. The top 15% of bandwidth users dominate network usage in North America, accounting for 54% of total monthly network traffic in March. That group consumes on average 212 gigabytes per month, the equivalent of 100 hours of video and more than seven times the 29 GB of a typical subscriber. (Sandvine termed this top 15th percentile of users

Comcast in some regions is enforcing caps... 300GB a month and $5 to $10 (cant remember) per 50GB block after I think if was Tennessee that had this right now.. it's a "trial" before they eventually roll it out nation wide... but competition from Google, Verizon and others has so far held it off the north east and north at least...

So your getting a $10 extra charge...  And how much do you pay for the 300GB at what speeds - you still have not said..

All I can say if they are charging you if you go over - then don't go over.. Go outside more ;) heheeh  Cut some of your shows quality down, etc.. You don't need everything in 1080P/4k ;)

I have 4 computers streaming at any given time Netflix and you tube. I am in the 300-600gb/mo range.

I am currently at 326gb for this months billing cycle. It will go higher when kids are home from school. No caps here.

I use Comcast's Economy plan for $39.99 a month (3 mbps down) and simply go to a public hotspot when I desire higher speeds. Anyway, no caps yet in Colorado, either.

Thankfully I don't have CrapCast (lol) anymore, but I used to have it from 2007, I think, to 2014.

My parents have had NineStar since last year and my brother and I have AT&T Uverse a couple days after New Years Day this year.

I did have DirecTV for a short while, but it's expensive!

I recently got the 100Mbps line in Nov/Dec timeframe. Since then, I have not been able to stay under 300GB each month. I'm using about 400-500GB on average. They give you 3 free months of going over and then charge $10 for each 50GB you go over.

Saying cut back is absurd of a notion in today's world. For one thing, Comcast gives me 24/7 HD tv viewing as part of a cable package. This cap is designed only to keep from going to a cheaper offering from Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon. Why can't I get that same option online?

Secondly, there is no competition in local markets. AT&T Uverse is not everywhere, DSL in my area is still limited to 6Mbps speeds and Wireless companies have much worse caps at 10-50GB with far more expensive rates to just get to 50GB.

It's very easy to blow through it. Youtube, Netflix, Skype, Amazon, Backup Plans or Cloud Storage/Sync, Gaming, etc. Skype alone can use up to 30GB in a month if you do 6-10 hours a month with family.

300gb is not a lot to be honest, especially when you think some games on the Xbox One and Steam are getting close to 60gb each now.

As for useful suggestions all I can think of is buy your favourite shows on Blu-ray and rip them, or purchase them on iTunes so at least you know exactly how much you will download. Most stuff on Netflix at least is pretty old (apart from the exclusive stuff, like House of Cards) and usually pretty cheap to buy, the benefit of that is you own it, plus it will never go towards your data allowance.

I'd also buy games on disc if your a gamer, on the Xbox One and Steam anyway new titles are almost always significantly cheaper on disc then as a digital download.

Coincidentally there was construction in my neighborhood yesterday and I was out out cable and internet pretty much all day.  As for my usage, I have 4 computers, 3 phones and a couple tablets.   I went completely digital for games so everything I get for the Xbox is digital as well as (obviously) Steam.  I have a teenager that is on Spotify pretty much all day when he's home as well as pretty heavy Netflix and YouTube usage.  I also download ISOs I need for work from home because it's faster than my work connection.  A lot of times I get them through torrent so I keep seeding for a while (I don't know if that graph shows upload or if it's total bandwidth, probably total).

This is my SpeedTest result:

4384625260.png

I can't figure out where to check what I'm supposed to be paying for from Comcast.  My bill just says internet plus $10 for a "speed increase".  I'm assuming it's 50Mb but in the new plans I don't see that being offered.

"Go outside more ;) heheeh"

There's a whole lot of people that need to do that more in today's world!

To actually think that so many people set in front of a computer or tv or gaming system that many hours a day is insane, IMO.

I can find WAY more things to do just on accident then waste my life like that!

Get a business line, no caps

Business lines are typically much slower in speeds and its pointed more towards a static IP address AND much more expensive. A residential connection according to the sales page I see is much faster in speeds you can pay for for way way less.

I'm on Comcast and I have their Blast or 105/15 package - I'm rather happy with it but I never ever pay for full price, I just call em up and tell them I'm going to DSL or something and the CSR gives me a promo rate for another year. The rate for my Blast is about $79 and that is just way way too much.
