Hack the Roku 3 remote for other devices?

Recommended Posts

I purchased a Roku 3, the device is okay... pretty slow in certain areas and the UI is beyond ugly compared to others (especially the pause screen) I'm going to ditch the Roku and probably put it in another room and control it (when I use it) from a mobile device.

The only thing I actually care for about the Roku is the quality of the remote control, It's got everything on there a remote needs and shortcuts to open several video networks such as Netflix, Hulu...etc.

Now, I'm looking to hack this thing, it works via Wifi. Is there any software or hardware I can buy that can actually get this working on say a Windows PC? I currently have a Flirc on the pc which I use my boring tv remote but this would be the ultimate replacement if it actually worked on the PC.

The Roku 2 and Roku 3 remotes are bluetooth.

You can pair them by holding the button down in the battery compartment. Once paired they act as a limited keyboard.

Up down left ride for example are something like A, Q, N, M. You can use any app to rebind them.

I was using my roku to play some older games on steam, but eventually the 'D-pad' made my thumb too sore to continue.

You just need a bluetooth adapter for your PC. You can, if you want/have, try pairing it with your mobile phone if it has bluetooth, you should at least see it showing as a device when you press the button.

What application can I use for windows that will let me pair the device? Or is it something I can do from control panel?

I've got a flirc connected to my pc, will that do?

On your PC goto the bluetooth settings.

Take the battery cover off the remote and hold the button down for ~10 seconds.

Once you've done that, it'll be in pairing mode ready to connect to a new device.

Wait a few moments and you should see a new bluetooth device show up, it might be shown as 'keyboard' at first until you try to connect to it. Click the Pair button and you'll be prompted for the pin. Use all zeros, 0000 and click next. It'll then list BMC20730 as connected. You can then use the buttons on the remote in notepad as a limited keyboard.

I have the Roku 3. I thought the Remote uses Wi-Fi connection, not Bluetooth.

I just want to point out.. the Roku 2 and 3 remotes are not bluetooth enabled. They are in fact wifi enabled. Specifically a low power wifi via the Roku box or stick.

As mentioned, the Roku 2 XS is Bluetooth enabled.  It's also discussed in several threads in Roku's forums.
