'Draw Muhammad' contest planned in Phoenix

Recommended Posts

An Phoenix area anti-Muslim activist is planning a "draw Muhammad" cartoon contest and rally in Phoenix on Friday, KPNX reports.

The event is being dubbed a "Freedom of Speech Rally" and comes three weeks after a similar event in Garland, Texas, that prompted violence by two alleged ISIS sympathizers. The president of the Islamic Community Center of Phoenix where the protest is planned said he has been notified by Phoenix Police and the FBI about the event. Usama Shami said he respects the protesters' right to free speech.

"Everybody has a right to be a bigot. Everybody has a right to be a racist. Everybody has a right to be an idiot," Shami said.

that would just add fuel to fire :(

idiots provoking idiots

While I agree that both groups are behaving like utter idiots (and any other word to describe aholes), we all must agree that while reprehensible to hosts these sort of events, our constitution protects us and allow us to have such events.   Even if you whole heartily disagree, and oppose their views, they should be allowed to express them AND be safe doing so.

Just because they say something that is horrible, it doesn

So... their argument is something along the lines of

"to prove our belief in freedom of speech we're going to use it to ###### of the people that will kill our families and when they do, we'll complain that they had o cause to do so. and in the process will also offend the 99.9999% of muslims who aren't extremist terrorists, because freedom of speech exist to offend people who don't believe in our type of sky fairy"

yeah... great people...  Kind of like mocking people in school and being surprised when they get tired and hit back.

Rather than compassion and understanding we see hostility and confrontation. What an incredibly immature thing to do, though I can't say I'm surprised.

Freedom of Speech Rally

How is it a Freedom of Speech Rally exactly?

I understand they are the right to do that but leaving the legal aspect of the "rally" aside calling this a Freedom of Speech Rally is a shenanigans at best.

Se, you are looking at this and getting mad because they are not great people and what they are doing is just mean/rude/etc, etc, etc...but they do have the right to say it!!!!  And on top of that, have the right to be safe while saying it.

I am not condoning what they are saying, but I do think they MUST be allowed to say it.   It sucks I know.......

Homosexuality offend a lot of people. Gay pride parades offends most people with die hard faith so do you all think they should not be held as well?

but when the bbcs top gear went to the home of nascar and painted man love rules and other slogons on the side of their cars it was considered funny but it offended the people of the state they were in.

i guess its one rule for x people and another rule for the others then?

I am a Muslim, it goes against what I was taught to believe in, but I think that this trend should continue, there should be more draw Muhammad days. Though instead of portraying Muhammad in an offensive way, draw him with flowers, peace etc... the more people do this the more tolerant Muslims will become towards this, there will come a time when drawing Muhammad in any way/act will become tolerable. This will take time, but if people have patience and follow logic this is the way to take.

Lastly, the people who are just doing this to provoke, ******** them.

Freedom to offend, nothing to do with speech what so ever

There is plenty that has been said on this forum and on the news that I find offensive. That does not take away that persons right to say it.

Homosexuality offends Islam (and is punishable by death just the same as drawing the prophet), but yet you don't say anything about the millions of events/gatherings that go on yearly, why with this offense in particular?

Thank you, I was going to say the same thing. One could make a list of of parades, activities, etc that would offend another group of people, but the big difference is that seems that the Muslims (or maybe I should say Islamic extremists) are the only group that start killing people when they get offended. Though I will say there are some other groups (animal rights groups, tree huggers, LGBTetc activist groups come to mind) that get very livid and vocal when they get offended. So far the worst they do is stir up hatred and bad publicity, as opposed to trying to kill people. I can't recall a recent incident of anybody getting killed or threatened with death for drawing Jesus. If the rest of us have to get over whatever it is we don't like and choose not to participate in, they do too. At least if they expect to live in this country.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I will defend anyone's right to say something offensive or politically incorrect regardless of whether I agree with it or not. Our western society is filling up with a bunch of pathetic pansies that not only take offense at everything, but is scared to death of offending anyone. It's annoying as all get out and we'd better watch out because the extremest groups have no problem doing things that offend us... or kill us...

How can you say that? Isn't homosexuality a "choice" according to islam? So according to islam aren't they are "choosing" to offend and then even offending more by showcasing it openly?
