My Iphone was remotely hacked. Need some advice

Recommended Posts

Morning. I am taking part in a religious retreat.

Yesterday I was charging my phone and when it was around  95% charged I went to check on it and was texting my wife. While I was doing that I noticed random text/garbage during the texting and I said what is going on here.

It happened twice and each time I cancelled. No text was sent. I then remembered about a flaw the news reported that  certain characters including Arabic could cause the phone to crash and reboot.

This did not happen here but I turned off the phone. I then noticed a guy with a MAC laptop and portable ATT wifi hotspot. I also glanced at the screen which at the time I was not close to it and it looked just like my screen when texting.

I alerted the leaders of the group and they are handling it as in this retreat you cannot have Computer or Cameras and phones are turned off always for participants. For myself and the rest of the group that helps out Phones are OK.

Apple did over the phone a diagnostic and it showed all OK. All Apple stores in my area are booked up for support.

So I wanted to ask if there is a software I can download to scan my iPhone and make sure no malware or anything was planted on my phone?

Everything happened so fast yesterday and I was able to turn off the phone quickly and keep it off for hours.

Any answers I can get would be appreciated and hopefully help others here who went thru same thing.

thats just jesus taking the wheel, errr keyboard

but in all honesty, if you were texting while the phone was plugged in its probably a faulty Chinese cable or plug that is sending spikes in current that is messing up the touch screen and misinterpreting where your fingers are on the screen.

hey don't judge that guy with the laptop and att stick, didn't you learn anything at this bible camp?

It is not a camp first off. A retreat for men and why did I see a screen that looked like my text message screen on the laptop? Now you do bring up a good question about it being plugged in.

Damn I can't recall if I removed it from the cable. I have texted before while cable in and never saw this. Also the random text just appeared without me typing

Thanks for the link but the phone never crashed or rebooted. I did shut it off to be safe

Because Mac's with the latest OS can send text messages from the computer as they're synced with the phone, so he can see his texts there and send them.

if you saw the same garble message that's probably coincidence since everyone has been sending those to everyone with an iphone the last few days.

also the text won't hack your phone it will "only" disable it for a few hours. I think if you have a friend with an iphone/mac they can fix it faster but I'm not sure, I haven't really cared about it much.

So no you where not hacked, no he did not hack you, and you where being an ass telling on him.

As you said before you remember something about the flaw i guess that would tell you that this is not a hack.

and what a douchey thing to do in reporting him to "the leader"

If your phone is not jailbroken you have nothing to worry about lol. (Oh cool you are in Miami too! :D)

You can't be sure because mine is jailbroken...  nothing happens which the article mentioned.  So mine is fine so far.

That's not what I meant. I mean if it was jailbroken and maybe they left openssh on with the default user/pass it could be hacked... but otherwise I highly doubt it.

Well you did ruin someone's internet usage because your Messages app had garbage text, if it was me I would be ######  . Do you have a screenshot of the text?

For being a snitch? Yes.   I doubt this guy was hacking your phone.. if he was then apple has a whole hell of a lot of trouble on their hands.. because that means there is a flaw in iPhone that can lead to remote control from anyone.

Let me clear this up. I found out after I talked with the leaders that no one could have computers or phones with them. This person is not part of the leaders or organizers.

He serves like I do. It is too much of a coincidence that my phone was left charging and he was less than 10 feet away. He had his equipment. I was able to turn off the phone and later turned on nothing happened again.

I don't think they talked to him right then because we were very busy all of us setting up this event before the participants came. I would say less than 2 hours after this happened he left.

So it seems he was there to do something and leave. Since I dont use MAC I did not know they can send text messages from the system. Thanks for letting me know about that.

So I feel too much of a coincidence especially when no one is allowed to have a computer there. It is not nice to be having a private chat with your wife and someone is messing with you.

I wanted to react real bad but I had to control myself because I would have been kicked out and it could have been worse. Not going to let some idiot do that to me.

Perhaps in  a way I over reacted and was not hacked but again put yourself in my position having that occur. It would have kept happening if I did not turn off the phone.

Anyways he will get his just due and he needs to know about the rules. Some of you can still say I am wrong and bash me but that is OK.

I'll defend OP's right to be a snitch. OP did the right thing.

id have looked on him with more favour if he had asked the guy on the laptop to stop using it as it was "camp rules" for non helpers to use electrical equipment.

As a pure diagnostic step, why didn't you go over and plant a boot to his chest/facial region? If the issue stops at that point, you found the source. Root cause analysis, my friend.

I did not know the rules until after I spoke to the leaders. Yes I thought about planting one on him but that would have gotten me kicked out. I cant allow that to happen

Why would you be thinking about hurting some guy when 1 you have no proof it was him that caused your phone to crash 2 you appear to be working at some sort of retreat for people

men perhaps females too ( you haven't stated this) who are there for some reason again you have not stated what the retreat is about. Perhaps you are in the wrong job if you are having hostile thoughts towards so one you do not know for doing something you have no proof of.

Oh yeah, I forgot about openssh.  I am sure openssh is not installed as default.... if you want openssh, then you will have to install it to use.
