Android Phones: Whats the best?

Recommended Posts

As the title states; what's the best Android phone right now?

I have a craptastic iPhone 4S (Got it for free), and I'm looking to upgrade.

I absolutely hate iPhones. The software needed to add/remove media is so irritating, the inability to customize it, and not to mention the lack of expandable media.

So, hit me up. I'm hoping to build a custom ROM, but that is for another day.

I was looking at the Samsung Galaxy S6 or the Note 3, but I have the iphone 6+ (Work Phone), and I feel like I'm carrying a brick in my pocket (with an otterbox)

I'm on Verizon right now, and the reason for upgrading is because where I work, 3G has almost no signal, and 4G would be better for work.

HTC is a good choice, but if Verizon, seriously look at the Sony Xperia line.

I'm partial to Google Nexus, you can play with modding, custom os, always re flash using the official rom from the android download page. Also get new android version quicker, and with the right camera app, take uncompressed DNG files if your in to photoshop / lightroom editing.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 has the best screen, camera and fastest CPU/GPU but it's also rather expensive (but no more expensive than other flagships, I guess).

You'll get extremely slow updates, however and there's no removable battery or SD card slot.

If I was to buy a new phone right now, It would probably be the Moto X.

I'd love a Nexus 6 but its just too big for me so the X is the next best thing for me.

In no particular order:

HTC One M9

Moto X (2014)

Moto G (2014) if you want to save money and don't need top specs

Galaxy S6

Xperia Z3+/Z3+ Compact

The Nexus 6 and the Galaxy Note 4 are too big in my opinion, as is the LG G4. The Nexus 5 would be an option if it weren't almost two years old by now.

If you can wait, keep an eye out for the next Moto X and whatever Nexus models Google are going to announce this year.

I think Moto X gen 3 is rumoured for Sept time and the currrent rumours around Nexus suggest a Nexus 5 Gen 2 so back to a decent size and a good price. It won't be a benchmark breaker but it will be a solid piece of kit.

Well, I'm looking to get something by the end of the month. My job requires I have a good working phone.

Whats the size difference between the iPhone 6+ and the Samsung Galaxy S6? Size doesn't matter, I've lived with the 1/4" brick since October. I've grown accustomed to it.

I use my phone for remote connections, ssh, sftp, Teamviewer, and other things. I'm also looking to create a few apps for it, and test things that way.

I'm not sure what is what, much like cars, I know the expensive ones, but I don't know the economical ones.
----

This might work better. My contract expires some time this fall, I believe September. If I could get a 4G phone, cheap one to last me till then, that'd work out great. I play mostly 1 game, Game of War, and I only remote when a server has issues on the network.

What is every ones thoughts on the "Samsung Galaxy Core Prime" - $170 Retail, and I could upgrade to a better phone, while having a back up in case mine breaks. I have to make a decision by the 12th. I'd prefer to have it by Friday (I have the day off).

The more plain/vanilla the OS, the better.

This. I have a Nexus 4, and I love it. I would only buy an Android phone if it had vanilla Android. Which pretty much means Nexus devices. The Moto X is a good phone, (my girlfriend has it) but it's not stock Android and it does have some extra stuff in it that you can't uninstall. For someone like me, that would drive me crazy. Don't even bother with HTC or Samsung phones because their bloatware OS is awful.

The other thing I like about Nexus phones is that they also don't have any carrier bullsh-- on them.

May be a silly question - but why would you want a phone for that kind of work? I'm sure it's possible but I would imagine getting a laptop, which depending on the phone vs laptop could actually work out cheaper? Sure you can't make calls etc but it does mean you could just stick with a very basic cheap phone as long as it makes the calls you need etc and have something more suited to the purpose?

I work in a secured facility. Generally, phones are only allowed unless they are work computers, which are allowed into data halls. So that's why I use a phone.

If you work in a secure environment, what is the company's policy for BYOD?  Do they state what the minimum requirements are for Android?  Here at my company to bring an Android as a BYOD it must be 4.3 or above.

They prefer iPhones because of no external memory or anything of that sort, but it only pertains to tablets/laptops. Phones don't "really" matter, according to my boss, but they all run Android there, and I'm sick of Siri talking to me in the middle of the damn day. I'd assume the latest version like 4.x+, but they just said "No Laptops/Tablets".

Like no joke, she'll say "Sorry, I didn't catch that, could you repeat it again?" and then spout some random search. My phone sits on my desk, which is 15ft+ away.

Just because your boss says that doesn't mean that is company policy.  I'd check to see what is the company's BYOD policy before you buy a new phone.  You might buy a nexus 6 and find out that the company's policy states that only Samsung S5/S6/Note3 are allowed as android devices.  Just my advice.

At my company we have an entire BYOD program that a person submits a form for and their manager approves.  The program has a list of approved devices that can be used.  If you don't have one of those approved devices then you cannot enroll your device in our mdm environment and get company data on it.

What I would say is try to find a LG G3 ... its a VERY capable phone. It's what I have. 5.5 inch Quad Core 3GB ram and a gorgeous screen Removable Battery and SD card slot. It's last years model so you can probably get a great deal on it. I bought mine off contract on eBay for $280 running a Nightly CM12 of 5.1.1

I have it activated on a $45 a month verizon prepaid Account. With unlimited Text, Data and 2GB of data (if you auto pay)

Since you need a phone for that kind of work, you will need a phone that is 6" or larger for remote access...    5" or smaller is too small for you for remote access.

Something like Samsung Note 3 or 4.. Screen is big enough for remote access.

Up to you.

Well, I'm trying to find something fairly cheap to hold me over for a few months.

Look up on Sprint, Verizon, TMobile, etc for their phone deals...  some free to take home.. or pay a small fee upfront..

You can do the monthly payment or get 2 years contract..   either way is up to you.

Moto X and LG G(3 or 4)  are brilliant phones.   I am not too keen on the new HTC One (and i am an htc fan, currently running M8, and having owned at least 10 different htc phones in recent past)

i was looking for a new phone for ages. i tried buying used, or buying chinese..........

at the end i bought the new galaxy S6....       my finances be screwed. dammit.

but really, S6, G4, Nexus6, Moto X is basically were it is.  Cannot find better.

I currently have a LG G3. No complaints at all. So I would say the G4 is a good phone unless they have taken horrible steps back from the G3.

I am on Verizon, but I signed up for Google's Project Fi service. If I get on it i am going to check it out, which means right now I have to go with a Nexus 6, which I am fine with since it is vanilla Android. I actually want the Nexus 6 more than any other phone myself. It is big, but I can live with it.

Finally, I use an Xperia Z2 Tablet as my main tablet for everything (and I do own two iPads thanks to work), so I am very interested in the latest phone versions of it, the Xperia Z3, as even with Sony's software, it is a good experience and solid hardware.

I still have a little less than a year on my Verizon contract, so I am hoping I do get accepted to Google's Project Fi. If I do, I will suck it up and spend the extra $50 a month and just have a second phone, then once my Verizon contract is up, say see you later to them, as long as Project Fi proves to have good coverage.

For Verizon I'm surprised nobody has said anything about the Droid Turbo. I've been watching it for months now and looks pretty solid and at times better than the Galaxy S6.

I got the ole lady a S6 and it is nice but I'm not convinced it will trump my getting a Turbo soon.
