P2P malware question

Question

Is it possible that malware could change p2p save folder such as limewire back in 2008-2010. Say that malware uploaded your personal computer files photos and everything else to the limewire gnutella network. Is that possible. I've heard that malware could make your files available to the hacker not an entire network but this article states different. Is this a little far fetched. http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0016-p2p-file-sharing-risks

They will not generally go to play games with moving files around.  They will encrypt files, they will delete files, but they will not move files around.  Could it be done, there is no reason why they can't.  Would it be done, well if I have enough rights to move files on your machine (or make changes to a specific program to save to another location on your computer), I would do something a bit more vicious....so highly unlikely that malware would move files around on you or change where to dump those files.

No that website is accurate, your interpretation of what they are saying is incorrect. You asked if they can change the folder...why would they?

They can get access to your files and download them from your computer and do what they want with them. They can also possibly do other things.

In addition, security problems within the P2P program could open the door to attacks from hackers. Some malware is designed to change which folders you have designated for sharing, so criminals can access your personal information.

What exactly are you concerned with or think could happen.. Yes its possible for malware to share out your whole hard drive..

Yes essentially it could. So think as your downloads folder as a Sandbox but not a very good one. if you set a location in one of these file sharing apps. Malware could certainly do what you think it could. Wether anyone would need to, Why would they? Maybe they want to index peoples hard-drives for themselves the C&C operators so they could collect data. Anyway I am getting off on a tangent here. Uploading it to a P2P network WOULD be one way of doing it.

So malware could potentially share your whole computer on limewire network? I have talked to a few malware experts and they said they have never seen such a thing? That this link was just trying to scare people not to use p2p

just because have not seen it doesn't mean its not possible.  Its quite possible for malware to do anything you could do on purpose..

So while you want to share out c:\share, there is nothing saying that malware could not change that to share out c:\

Once malware is installed on your system it normally elevates it's permissions to have administrative or even higher rights with a system account and hides what it does so it can do what it was programmed to do.  These things could be keylogging, screen captures, using your machine as a file host, serve your entire hard drive, mirror your drive contents for regular review, do things on your behalf, etc.  There are endless possibilities of what malware can do once it is installed, anyone that thinks these things are not possible are ill informed and do not know the true dangers of malware.

Hello,

Are you thinking of the Win32/Antinny worm for the (primarily) Japanese Winny P2P network?  Also, there are bots and worm which use various P2P protocols for communications (downloading updates, receiving new instructions, exfiltrating stolen data, etc.).

Is it likely that malware could be embedded in a file you download from limewire or another p2p program that malware would change your share folder to add personal files from your computer to your share folder on limwire. How likely is it that malware would do this

Well then add comments to your original thread, or have mod move it to this section and state that in the thread..  Don't start new threads with the same exact topic because you didn't get the answers you wanted in the other thread..  Thought it was pretty clear in that other thread while is might not be likely - it is possible, etc.

It's not likely you will win the lottery - yet people do win, etc.. ;)

So it's about the same chances of winning the lottery ha?

You have more chance of getting banned than winning the lottery
