Two things regarding Windows 10

Recommended Posts

I have two things regarding a couple of features in Windows 10.

First, Cortana. I know they can be useful for a majority of users, but Microsoft needs to consider the minority, the deaf and/or hard-of-hearing users. Because of that, and I'm in the minority, I think MS needs to make a switch that turns Cortana on or off.

Second, Edge aka the Spartan web browser replacing IE. Will Edge be a standalone program *on* the desktop, Metro-ized on the Start Screen like in Windows 8.x, or both? I think both of those should be on the desktop where users can just click on the icons.

Any thoughts?

From the W10 preview, if you don't want to use the voice controls with Cortana you don't have to. All she'll be is a broker for Windows search.

Edge is a modern app. All modern apps run on the desktop in windows like traditional programs. If you're running your computer in tablet mode than it'll be full screen like Windows 8 apps.

Why wouldn't deaf people need Cortana? She answers questions with both spoken words and written language. You could always just read the response. It's still useful even if your computer doesn't have any speakers.

If you are incapable of speaking, then you could always just type the questions in. That works just fine.

And it can be disabled today if you like. They've already implemented that.

  • 2 weeks later...

There are many reasons to add a text interface for cortana. What should I do if I am in a meeting on silent mode?  What if I just don't want to feel stupid talking to my laptop? What if my kids have gone to sleep and I don't want to make noise by having a conversation with my computer?  And then, there is the problem of errors. Siri has been around for years and still fails to understand 38% of the time. I don't know about other people, but I just don't want to be heard having a verbal conversation with someone who is that stupid. But when typing, there is a grace factor - if Cortana gives a dumb answer I can just retype and nobody will have overheard her ignoratio.

So... let's have a text interface (or at least an app that can convert "HC, I've got an appointment with Mike on Tuesday at 9:00" to whatever Cortana needs to add that to my reminders.

It can already accept text. You compared it to Siri which is a poor comparison because it is far superior to Siri. Cortana can do much more and do it well. I don't use it often (mainly when driving to speak text) but it does the job very well. I've never used Siri admittedly but your statment makes it seem like you don't trust it to be accurate. Cortana I trust.

When you type you aren't required to add the "Hey Cortana" but I tested it here and it understood just fine, ready to open my calendar.
