The operating system for Nintendo's platform codenamed NX will allegedly be Android based, Japanese business outlet Nikkei reports.

According to the report, found and translated by NeoGAF user duckroll, claims that NX

Not unless they just use the stock Android userland parts.

I think it makes perfect sense that Nintendo bases everything of theirs on Android moving forward (They're not Microsoft that can maintain their own OS for everything, even Sony bases their stuff on open source code), but that doesn't mean they're just going to be producing Nintendo branded Android phones. What they're going to take is the Android kernel and possibly the Java API layer, and then bolt their UI/app store/etc. on top of it. Present the same Nintendo UI and applications to end users, but provide developers a unified API and hardware access layer that would work across handhelds and consoles.

Well so far so little is known about NX we can't say what they will take or leave or change or whatever, of even if this android rumor has any bases in reality.

Personally I don't see android as a good choice, as they would have to add and remove so much to make it a good console, that is if they're doing a home console even... but on the other hand it is a secure OS that has all the parts needed to make a console OS with the security and lock ins they need. other options would be to make their own new low level OS or build on from linux which means they would have to add in a lot of the security stuff again themselves. so... be interesting to see what architecture they go with.

Nintendo success isn't rocket science, The WiiU has been out for nearly 3 years now with zero new Zelda or Metroid its not a new console they need but to pull their heads out of their collective asses.

Nintendo need to get back into the arms race. Stop trying to be different and try competing with whats out there!!

If Nintendo made a serious console to rival the PS4 or X1. I`d buy it in a heartbeat. Simple.

They can still do all there casual/family stuff, but on a console that will also run modern AAA titles.

I honestly dont understand why they themselves dont see this?!?

They have some of the most recognised and long running i.p`s in the business. Yet sit on there hands.

Can we get back to the SNES/N64/GC days where you were creating competitive hardware Ninty....please!!!!!!!

It isn't just hardware though Dotdot, they need first class, third party support. Look at the GameCube vs. PS2. The GameCube was more powerful than the PS2 but that didn't help it much because Sony was far better at working with third parties to bring the best* games to the PS2. Nintendo just can't seem to work out how to deal with third parties without pissing them off in some way. I would love a Nintendo console that can play all the cross platform games as well as a PS4. Man imagine how nice it would be with a solid Nintendo controller, PS4 games and graphics and all of Nintendo's amazing IP. Would be an amazing console. Can't see it happening though

* Subjective obviously but you get my point

Arguably the only one of those that where truly competitive was the SNES. IT's not about the hardware.

While the Wii U doesn't have many games, the games that's on it shows that you can ake awesome games without top of the line hardware.

Interesting to see where this goes, but it doesn't bode well for the Wii U. Supporting 2 home console platforms simultaneously wouldn't be something they are going to do.

Nintendo does not need a new console, they need good games and lots of them!!  The Wii U is not that bad, it can handle itself quite nicely.

The NX is better be a GREAT console that beats the PS4 and XB1 to make third party notice....  Still, the NX will need GAMES....

I suppose I just expect the life-cycle of a console or the time between consoles to be longer than 5 years.

PS2: 12 years

PS3: 11 years

Xbox: ~7 years

360 ~10 years

Although Nintendo do seem to have a 6-7 year cycle

N64 '96-'03

GC '01-'07

Wii: '06-'13

I guess the timing works out.

I don;t think it is that bad, either. Gaming is about fun, not power. The 3DS is killing the Vita although the Vita is a powerhouse. There is also a lot of popularity among retro-styled games lately.

you're comparing different number there's though, if you're going to use time between releases for the Nintendo consoles that's what you need to use on the Sony and MS consoles to.

In other news, Nintendo have flat out denied this rumour.

hardly surprising.

but on the other hand, they would say that anyway, just to play devils advocate.

Yeah, Nintendo isn't anywhere near ready to start talking about software and hardware features this far out.

With the indicated release frame they hinted at when they teased they where working on NX, they better be. factory tooling and production tolerance agreements alone can take a year, not taking into account testing on prototype and factory units and QnA.

yeah, but even then, if you look at the history of MS and Sony at this point they where already publically talking specs.

BUT, on the other hand, Nintendo has never really been the one to do that or care about specs at all. but with the WiiU lunching early and if this is another home console, they will be even earlier, it seems they might be trying to fight MS and Sony by not competing directly, but by launching mid generations. which could work out very well for them, either as a cheaper console with marginally better specs, or as a similarly priced console with mid generation specs (basically Wii U as compared to 360 and PS3)
