Jailed Israeli soldier freed after pork sandwich arrest, as army admits 'being wrong'

It does't take long for a sensible ban to become a religious taboo, and once it reaches that state, that's all she wrote. As for those others, all have similar explanations if you want to dig for them.  Just because people in those days didn't have our technology, that doesn't make them stupid. It some ways, they could well have known better not to eat stuff that was bad for you than WE do!

Never suggested they were stupid, and I agree with your point about a reasonable prohibition taking on superstitious reasons later on, especially if the initial sensible reason is no longer valid. The continuing ban on pork despite it presenting no unique risk of evidence of that. However, It's also true that some prohibitions have always been for superstitious reasons.

I think we can both agree that any individual who wants to avoid any food for any reason has a right to, but imposing or punishing others for not sharing that view and diet is unacceptable. :)

I consider all traditions, "rules"  or condemnations in religion to be pretty funny - and pathetic.

But the idea that someone will go to hell - just for eating something - has to be the funniest of them all.

Buddhists respect all living things
Hindus think cows are sacred
Muslims cant eat pork or they will go to hell
Christians think eating a cracker with wine is the same as drinking the blood and cannabilizing some zombie who supposedly lived 2000 years ago.

Out of those 4, only the Buddhists make any sense whatsoever.

Im moving to Tibet

Maybe it is easier to be picky about which foods you will and won't eat for superstitious reasons when you aren't starving.

The abstinence from pork is simply because its considered a dirty animal.  In the bible, it mentions that it doesnt chew cud, and has a split hoof - so its dirty -
About as silly as the rest of the bible.
What FloatingFatMan has said pork might be true - and makes sense, but we are talking about religion here...  pork is no more "dangerous" to eat than chicken, or eggs.

There are some worms that are specific to pork, but fish and uncooked chicken, bad eggs have their own Molotov cocktail of bad things
