A horrible new PayPal policy opts you into getting robocalls

eBay is planning to spin PayPal off. Looks like they are setting up a new revenue stream for the independent company :/.

I wish there were strong consumer protections to prevent exploitative business practices like this. Nobody should be forced to accept unwanted advertising calls. This sort of behaviour is unacceptable.

So is there an alternative people are moving to? Something that is customer friendly?

Hopefully new rules will be passed by the FCC to prevent this.  Part of the original article which I clipped out.

It's these types of telemarketing offers that have driven hundreds of thousands of public complaints to the FCC. In response, the agency's proposal

If there isn't a real need to give PayPal your phone number and they don't validate (by calling you) just enter either PayPals support number, 1-888-221-1161 or (your area code)-555-1212.

i'll be canceling my account. i just dont use it enough and dont want to support this type of service.

This isnt the only major change to their TOS either.... if anyone remembers the other change whereby they basically own all of your online IP.

Well they can call and text me all they want. My paypal phone number is set to my home phones landline number which has been turned off for years now.

Still, I don't like the way paypal is going recently.

Just prior to the widespread use of smartphones, we had a "Do Not Call" list in our state where you could register your phone number.

Companies were not allowed to call numbers on those lists and if they did, would be turned over to the states attorney generals office.

I was skeptical at first but it actually worked. We never got calls after putting our name on that list.

Been using Skrill / Moneybookers for a very long time. Not sure how good of exposure it has in the Western world, though.

Tbh I guess this is more to cover their backsides with the "You recently contacted us, on a scale of 0...5 how do you feel" texts which are becoming popular.

What content and what services? I just use it to buy stuff from some websites?

kind of vague, arent they? i doubt it's going to affect the end user like you that's just buying stuff from sites.

What i take from this is they are allowed to use any websites' data, images, IP, posts, et al, in any way they see fit. I'm not 100% sure about this. This is my own guess based on the information they provided.

For a company that handles transactions and money linked directly with a bank account, they seem a lot like a bank while lacking a lot of the standards, safeguards, and perhaps even laws that apply to banks. There have been so many complaints against Paypal for arbitrarily freezing funds and accounts, from 3 weeks to 6 months at a time. Their ToS keep getting worse and more intrusive, although they are far from the only company doing things like binding arbitration and "all your content are belong to us".

I think it's time I stopped using paypal. The recent ToS (yes I actually read it) didn't sit well with me at all, especially this phone number harvesting and calling section.
