Intersect
US government agencies have been hit by a "massive breach" affecting the personal data of millions of federal workers, officials said. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) confirmed on Thursday that almost four million current and past employees have been affected. The agency serves as the human resource department for the federal government. US officials suspect that the cyber attack originated in China, according to a senior lawmaker. The OPM issues security clearances and compiles records of all federal government employees. Information stored on OPM databases include employee job assignments, performance reviews, and training, according to officials. The breach did not involve background checks and clearance investigations, officials said. Senator Susan Collins, a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee called the breach "yet another indication of a foreign power probing successfully and focusing on what appears to be data that would identify people with security clearances." http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-33017310
DocM
China, again. Why am I not surprised? The entire US Govt. and other contractors need to implement the AirGap system developed by Branden Spikes for SpaceX and other Elon Musk companies. Spikes left last year and now his company works with DHS, Novartis, Boeing, Wells Fargo and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.

tompkin
Whatever is said, the long term outlook is that China is the greatest opponent to the U.S. in the 21st century.
DocM
What's an AirGap? Air gapping is a system that virtualizes the inernet for those behind a firewall. The browser actually runs in an external server like Spikes AirGap while all you see is a graphical representation - a movie for lack of a better term. Malware etc. can't enter your system on a well isolated system like AirGap, which takes it to another level. Their servers have layered & gapped security of their own specifically designed for Musk's companies to shut out China.
